The Columbia Falls boys basketball team picked up a couple of key conference wins last week, dropping Libby 72-29, Feb. 5 and Whitefish 59-44, Feb. 6, both on the road.

The Cats continue to shine on the road, with nine of their 10 wins away this season.

Against Libby Jett Pitts had 14 to lead the squad, while Easton Brooks had 10. All told, nine players scored.

The Cats had 36 rebounds in the Libby win and just four turnovers.

Against Whitefish Jory Hill had the hot hand with 19 points, six boards and three assists.

Senior Caleb Mee had a nice game with 10 and Easton Brooks had 10 as well as six rebounds and six assists.

The Cats out-rebounded the Bulldogs 37-19, which limited the Bulldogs’ second chances.

The Cats do a good job of spreading the scoring around, as eight players scored. The game was close at the half, but the Cats pulled away in the third and early in the fourth, but Whitefish managed to cut the deficit to seven later in the fourth, but the Cats turned Bulldogs’ poor shot selection later in the quarter into easy points in transition to pull away again.

“It was another good conference road win,” coach Chris Finberg said. “We shot the ball pretty well against them.”

The boys faced Polson at home Tuesday and beat them 58-46. They host Browning Thursday.

They are 6-2 in conference play and 10-4 overall.

The goal is to win out the regular season. If they can, the worst they can do is second in the conference heading into the divisional tourney.

“I think we’re playing pretty well,” Finberg said. “We want to keep that going.”
