PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sandpoint advances to state play-in behind Mire’s milestone night
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 3 hours, 29 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | February 14, 2026 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — She's the first to do it for Sandpoint High girls basketball since 2018.
Junior Brecken Mire scored a game-high 30 points for the second straight outing, including her 1,000th career point during the third quarter, to go along with six rebounds, three steals and two blocks, junior Jordyn Tomco buried four 3-pointers as she contributed 18 points and came away with a team-high four steals, and the No. 2 Lady Bulldogs overcame an early deficit to win a 5A District 1-2 loser-out game over the No. 3 Lady Bears on Thursday night at Les Rogers Court.
"We figured some things out offensively against their zone," Sandpoint High head coach Madi Schoening, who is the second-most recent 1,000-point scorer in school history, said. "We really got our offense rolling in the second and fourth, especially with a consistent game from Brecken scoring in all four quarters. Getting another 30-point game is huge — she's in a groove and her teammates are finding her. They've been having a lot of fun playing together."
Coach Schoening said she was glad the team was able to celebrate this milestone with Mire in their home gym.
"1,000 points is a huge accolade for Brecken," coach Schoening added of the milestone. "She's just been such a coachable player, and really has a hunger to win, and it's showing in the way she's playing and with her leadership amongst the team."
Sophomore Willow Betz also stuffed the stat sheet with four points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a career-high four blocks for Sandpoint, which used a 23-7 second-quarter scoring tally and a 17-10 fourth-quarter finish to claim the victory, which advances them to a 5A state play-in game set to be held today at Grangeville High against Skyview High of Nampa, with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
Brooklyn Becker recorded 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and both Jessa Skinner and Jacque Williams had 12 points and seven rebounds for Moscow, which led 20-10 after one quarter of action and finished the year with a record of 11-12, with four of those losses coming against the Lady Bulldogs.
"They came ready to play and shot well," coach Schoening said of Moscow. "They're a well-coached team and had a good game plan. They definitely made us work for it."
Junior Livia Driggs dished out a season-high six assists, junior Jaylah Butler had a 3-pointer, two assists and two steals, and Tomco and Mire also tallied two assists for Sandpoint, which heads into this afternoon's matchup with a record of 18-5. A broadcast of the game will be available on both Idahosports.com and the NFHS network.
"A quick turnaround, but that's the road to state, and we're excited to be on it," coach Schoening noted.
