SANDPOINT — The last time they met, Lakeland started strong, then held on for a three-point victory.
In the rematch, it was all Sandpoint.
The host Bulldogs scored the game’s first 16 points and rolled to a 59-29 victory over the Hawks in a 5A Inland Empire League game Friday night at Les Rogers Court.
“It’s tough to win basketball games when you have 27 turnovers and give up 21 offensive rebounds,” Lakeland coach Caleb De Fabiis said. “You can’t beat teams giving them 48 extra possessions. Our guards did not handle their pressure well tonight.”
Friday night’s win gave Sandpoint (9-10, 2-2 5A IEL) the upper hand over Lakeland (8-10, 3-3) in the battle for home-court advantage in the 5A District 1 tournament, which begins next Friday with the two teams facing each other again.
Sandpoint plays host to Moscow today, and travels to Lewiston on Tuesday, both in 5A IEL games to wrap up league play.
Lakeland is done with league play, and concludes the regular season Tuesday at Coeur d’Alene.
Lakeland would need a win on Tuesday, and for Sandpoint to lose one of its two remaining games, to earn the No. 2 seed and host the first-round game.
If Lakeland loses Tuesday, the Bulldogs would have to lose both games for the Hawks to be the higher seed.
Otherwise, it’s Lakeland at Sandpoint next Friday.
Sophomore Trent Boardman led Lakeland with 14 points. Senior Jaron Yager added eight points and eight rebounds.
Knox Williams scored 15 points for Sandpoint, which led 20-5 after the first quarter.
