PREP ROUNDUP: St. Maries win sets up showdown with Orofino for league title

• BOYS BASKETBALL

GRANGEVILLE — Senior Xavier Sloper scored 18 points and junior Landon Riberich added 17, and the St. Maries Lumberjacks blew the game open in the third quarter en route to a 76-48 Central Idaho League victory over the Grangeville Bulldogs on Saturday. 

Sloper scored 12 of his points in the first half for St. Maries (15-3, 6-1 CIL), and finished 6 of 8 from the field, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range.  

“Sloper did a great job in the first half of getting us going,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “Nice to see Landon catch the ball tonight and make some strong finishes around the basket.” 

JJ Yearout added 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals for St. Maries. Jack Barta had nine points and five assists. 

Max McGregor scored 13 points for Grangeville (4-17, 1-7), its season finale. Only the top four teams advance to the 3A District 1-2 tournament. 

St. Maries plays host to Orofino (16-2, 6-1 CIL) on Tuesday, with the winner taking the league title and the top seed to districts. The loser will host third-place Kellogg in the first round. 

Orofino beat St. Maries 53-47 at home on Jan. 24. The Maniacs’ lone league loss was to Kellogg.

GRANGEVILLE — The Bulldogs, runner-up to Lakeland in the 5A Region 1 tournament, advanced to the state with a win over the Hawks of Nampa in a state play-in game at Grangeville High.

Sandpoint (19-5) is ranked second in 5A (behind Lakeland) by MaxPreps.com, which is used to seed the state tournament. Brackets are expected to be announced today.

The state tournament begins on Thursday at Mountain View High in Meridian.

Skyview finished 12-11.


• WRESTLING

Area wrestlers compete in

tuneup for regionals

COEUR d’ALENE — Post Falls wrestlers Jaxon Brazle (98 pounds), Reise Reardon (113), Brayson Moore (138) and Landon Moore (175) claimed titles in the Lake City JV tournament on Saturday at Lake City High. 

The tournaments were briefly delayed after a fire was discovered in a ceiling light fixture in the teachers' lounge near the gym, causing the building to be evacuated. The tournaments resumed after Coeur d’Alene Fire Department crews deemed the building safe according to a press release from the Coeur d’Alene School District.

Colton Rush (126), Carter Newby (150), Dawson Riley (215) and Carson Webber (285) of Coeur d’Alene won titles. 

Jaiden DeTienne (105), Avery Whaley (125) and Brooklyn Anderson (190) captured titles in the girls tournament. 

Hunter Edmondson (115) and Alexandra Schroeder (130) of Lakeland also won titles. 

Lake City’s Poppy Schenk won at 140. 

Area girls teams will compete in the district tournament on Thursday at Bear Den in Moscow. The top two individuals, with the next highest seed in each weight class, advance to state Feb. 27-28 at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa. 

No team scores were kept.
