REGION 18 WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHP: Cardinals qualify all 10 for nationals

COOS BAY, Ore. — At this time last year, Seth Martin was putting the finishing touches on a 53-0 season and state 6A wrestling title for Post Falls High.
Martin, a two-time state champion for the Trojans, won his first Region 18 Championship for North Idaho College on Saturday, beating Matteo Monteiro Furtado Tresse of Umpqua Community College (Roseburg, Ore.) 6-4 in the 184-pound final on the campus of Southwestern Oregon Community College.
“He came out firing in the finals,” third-year NIC coach Derrick Booth said. “He just wrestled his match and was on the offensive early on. He was just looking to make opportunities for himself, and when he does that, he’s super dangerous.”
Dylan Block, a redshirt freshman from Great Falls, Mont., also won a regional title for NIC, beating Pablo Hernandez of Clackamas (Oregon City, Ore.) by a 6-3 decision in the 174-pound championship match.
“Dylan just needed to believe in himself and his offense,” Booth said. “He got a few takedowns early and just wrestled a smart match.”
Hoyt Hvass, a sophomore from Lewiston High, was runner-up at 133. Redshirt freshman Joe Sullivan (149), freshman Colton Tucker (157) of Coeur d’Alene High and redshirt freshman Colton Theobald (165) also finished second for the Cardinals, who finished second with 113.5 points.
Clackamas repeated as regional champions with 133 points.
NIC qualified all 10 of its wrestlers to the NJCAA Championships March 6-7 at the Mid-American Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
“There was a lot of good battles,” Booth said. “It’s good to see we’re right there. We’ll take this week to continue to get better and hopefully at nationals, we’re wrestling our best. If you can get all 10 through, anything can happen in the big dance. It’s good for us.”
Alexander Barajas, a sophomore from Bonners Ferry High, finished fourth at 141 for Big Bend to advance to nationals, as did teammate Logan Bradley (149), a freshman from Coeur d’Alene High, who was fifth.
The top four finishers advanced to nationals, with the fifth-place finishers at 133, 141, 149, 184 and 197 also advancing.
