Melvin Burnett, 80

Melvin (Mel) Charles Burnett, a devoted family man, skilled craftsman, and pillar of the Libby community, passed away peacefully Feb. 9, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, artistry, and humor. 

Born on March 29, 1945, in Sandpoint, Idaho, to Arthur and Myrtle Burnett, Mel’s journey was defined by his dedication to his loved ones and his craft. He married the love of his life, Judith (Judy) L. Burnett, on July 6, 1968, and moved to Libby, Mont., to build their life together. 

Mel’s professional career was as versatile as it was successful. From the grocery and retail industry to lumber mills, he eventually found his true calling in the retail lumber business. He concluded his career operating MillWork West alongside Judy. Even in retirement, Mel never truly stopped "working" — he found joy in woodworking, creating fine furniture and works of art, and restoring his 1930 Ford Model A. He was a master craftsman who took immense pride in remodeling and building homes and maintaining his own house and landscaping in pristine condition. Mel was well known for his humor and quick smile. You never knew when you might find your cookie screwed down to a table. 

A man of deep faith and community spirit, Mel was a regular fixture at his church and a generous supporter of Libby. Above all, he cherished his roles as a husband, father, brother, and grandfather. 

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, sister Alene, brother Kenneth, and his daughter, Melisa. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy, son Chad Burnett (Angie), daughters Shelley Schultz (Craig), Terri Sherman (Mark) and Kim Longenecker (Scott), sister Delores Campbell, brothers Don Burnett, Lyle Burnett, Lee Burnett and Herb Burnett, and as well as eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. 

A service to honor Mel's life will be held Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, at Faith Bible Church in Libby at noon, with a reception to follow. Arrangements are under the care of Schnackenberg and Riddle Funeral Home of Libby. Online condolences and memories may be shared by visiting schnackenbergfh.com.
