PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Yearout leads St. Maries to CIL title
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 months AGO
ST. MARIES — Senior JJ Yearout had a triple double (20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, three blocked shots) and the host Lumberjacks broke the game open in the second quarter to beat the Maniacs and capture the Central Idaho League title.
Jack Barta hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter, and Landon Riberich scored nine of his 16 points as St. Maries (16-3, 7-1 CIL) outscored Orofino (16-4, 6-2) 24-6 in the quarter.
“We didn’t turn ‘em over as much as I would have liked,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase of the second quarter. “But we sped the game up, forced some quick shots and we were able to get out and run.”
After struggling against Orofino’s zone in a 53-47 loss on Jan. 24, St. Maries made 10 of 19 3-pointers on Tuesday. Barta was 3 of 4, Yearout 3 of 5 and Riberich 2 of 3 from deep.
St. Maries won the league title for the 11th time since joining the CIL in the 2012-13 school year.
The win was Chase’s 300th at St. Maries, counting his 86 wins in eight seasons as Lumberjacks girls coach. He’s now 214-70 in his 12th season with the boys; he was 86-97 with the girls.
St. Maries wraps up the regular season Thursday at Bonners Ferry, then plays host to fourth seed Priest River on Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the 3A District 1-2 tournament.

SPIRIT LAKE — For one half, the host Tigers were making the upcoming 4A District 1 tournament look like it might be a best-of-3 series after all.
But the Badgers outscored Timberlake 47-20 in the second half to wrap in the Intermountain League title in the two-team league.
“It was a tale of two halves,” Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. “The first half we played one of the best halves of our season. We had great defensive pressure and really made it difficult for them to run their stuff.”
Max Simpson scored eight of his 17 points, and Brant Rush had nine of his 14, in the second quarter for Timberlake (6-13, 0-2 IML). And back-to-back 3s from Wade Van Gundy sent the Tigers into the locker room with a 33-24 lead.
Senior Sulay Abubakari scored 23 of his 36 points in the second half for Bonners Ferry (11-8, 2-0). Peyton Hinthorn added 14 points, Ty Schrock 13 for the Badgers, who won their fourth straight league title.
“The second half Bonners turned up the pressure and we turned the ball over too much,” Henry said. “They turned those into some easy points.”
Since Bonners Ferry swept the Tigers in their two league games, the Badgers just need to win Game 1 on Monday in Bonners Ferry to advance to state. If Timberlake wins, the series will continue with Game 2 on Wednesday and the deciding game Thursday, if necessary, both at Bonners.
"We know what is ahead of us,” Henry said. “We have to get ready for another game on Monday against them at their place if we want our season to continue.”

"Caden finished with a great performance on his last night as a Viking on his home court,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kent Leiss said.
Senior Alex McCall added a career-high 20 points for the Vikings.
“Great performance,” Leiss noted. “Good overall effort tonight. We still have a few things we need to get better at as we get ready for districts.”
No. 3 seed Coeur d’Alene will play at No. 2 seed Post Falls (14-6) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the loser-out first-round of the 6A District 1 tournament. The winner will play top seed Lake City in a best-of-3 series for the district’s lone berth to state, with Game 1 next Tuesday at Lake City.

COEUR d’ALENE — On senior night the Timberwolves celebrated nine seniors, and four of them started for the first time in their careers in a win over the Bears in the regular-season finale.
“Just a special night for the seniors,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “Just enjoyed them having this night.”
Ian Williams, Landen Oxenrider, Jacob Hill and Andy Everson each got their first career starts, and Beau Pearson started for the second time.
Williams had eight assists for Lake City (14-7).
“He’s always been a kid that would way more rather set up someone else for a basket than get his own,” Anderson said. “Landen Oxenrider’s defensive energy gave us a great boost; he took a charge early. And Jacob Hill hit an early 3 that got us going.”
Junior Josh Watson had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Jace Plummer added 10 points for Lake City which had five players score between 8 and 11 points. Pearson had eight points and eight rebounds.
Lake City will be the top seed to the 6A District 1 tournament. The Timberwolves will play the winner of Saturday’s Coeur d’Alene-Post Falls game in a best-of-3 series for the district’s lone berth to state. Game 1 is Tuesday at Lake City.

Priest River 50
PRIEST RIVER — The Wildcats outscored the Spartans 39-20 in the second half of a Central Idaho League win at Priest River High.
“The guys turned it on a little better defensively in the second half,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “We just didn’t match the energy that Priest River brought to the table in the first half. They were able to attack us in some spots and our guys got tired of it and did something about it.”
Junior Ty Cheney scored nine of his 16 points in the second half and also had 10 rebounds and junior Porter Lewis had 13 of his 15 points in the first half for Kellogg (11-9, 5-3 CIL), which concludes the regular season at Timberlake on Thursday.
“Ty was a little quiet in the first half and we had a good conversation at halftime,” Martin said. “Offensively, he didn’t settle and did a good job of putting pressure on the middle of their defense in the second half.”
On Monday, third-seeded Kellogg will travel to second-seeded Orofino and fourth seeded Priest River (5-13, 1-7) will visit face top-seeded St. Maries in the opening round of the 3A District 1-2 tournament.
Senior Ian Lamanna scored 21 points for Priest River.
