PREP GIRLS WRESTLING: Sandpoint grapples to back-to-back district titles behind three individual champions

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | February 20, 2026 4:45 PM
MOSCOW — Their success is no accident.
Behind championship runs from Rhaelyn Schedlbauer (110), Avery Inge (125), and Teagan Newsom (145), the Lady Bulldogs once again captured the All-Class District 1-2 title on Thursday at Moscow High's Bear Den.
"Back-to-back District 1-2 championships are a reflection of the standards these athletes commit to every single day — hard work, accountability, and trust in one another," Sandpoint High head coach Valerie Johansen said of her team, which scored 252 points, 68.5 more than runner-up Post Falls. "This team shows up ready to compete, ready to improve, and ready to represent something bigger than themselves. They’re not just pursuing titles; they’re helping reshape the landscape of girls wrestling and opening doors for the next wave of athletes. Through consistent effort and unwavering commitment, Sandpoint continues to set the tone and inspire growth in programs across North Idaho."
Schedlbauer won her lone bout by pin, Inge won three matches pin and another by forfeit for a 4-0 effort, and Newsom grappled to her second straight district title with three consecutive wins by pin. Izzy Stark (130), Vanessa Hood (135), Zxyloh Hull-Johnson (155), and Mackenzee Donenfeld (100) all posted a win by pin each and took home silver medals, as did Lilli Marti (235). Wrestling to third-place finishes were Ariana Turnbull (170), who had three wins by pin, Kaysha Kimura (155), who had two victories via pin, and Violet Henney (110), who clinched bronze by default.
Clark Fork's Summer Birch (120) scored all 16 points for the Lady Cats as she recorded two wins via pin and another win by a 5-0 decision. Priest River's Naia Lamb (125) had a win by pin and scored eight points for the Lady Spartans. Bonners Ferry's Aubree Graves (120) led the Lady Badgers with two wins by pin as she posted a fourth-place finish.
The top two placers in each weight class qualified for All-Class State Championship, set to be held Feb. 27 and 28 at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa. The third-place finishers are in the mix for one at-large berth statewide in each weight.
