PREP ROUNDUP: Brown, Armstrong, Garten repeat as district champs

MOSCOW — Kahli Brown (135 pounds), who won at 132 last year, and Kassie Voss (235) of Post Falls won district titles to lead the Trojans to a second-place finish at the District 1-2 girls wrestling tournament Thursday at Bear Den.
Sandpoint won the district title with 252 points. Post Falls was second with 183.5.
Murphee Balich (100) and Brooklyn Anderson (190) won district titles for Coeur d’Alene, which finished fourth. Anderson won at 165 last year.
Other local district champions included Hunter Edmondson (115) of Lakeland and Shelby Garten (130) of Timberlake, who won at 126 last season.
Lake City qualified three second-place finishers to state, including senior Aspen Kiser (145), who earned a state berth last year. Timberwolf sophomore Katie Rippentrop (170), a first-year wrestler who transferred in this year from a school in Nebraska, lost in the semifinals, then won three straight matches, the last one in a true second-place match, beating a girl from Sandpoint who beat her last weekend, to qualify.
“She just wrestled tremendously today; really proud of her,” Lake City girls coach Nathan DeLeon said.
The top two placers in each weight class qualify for state next Friday and Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa. The third-place finishers are in the mix for one at-large berth statewide in each weight.

SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Max Simpson scored 29 points as the host Tigers beat the Wildcats on senior night.
Senior Brant Rush added 14 for Timberlake (7-13), which plays at Bonners Ferry on Monday in the 4A District 1 tournament, needing a win to extend its season.
“Really proud of the team, and especially all seven of the seniors for getting a win on senior night,” Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. “The guys did a great job of finding Max down low and he converted a lot of low post points.”
Draeden Taylor scored 18 points, Cayden Honnerlaw 15, Porter Lewis 14 for Kellogg (11-10), which travels to Orofino on Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the 3A District 1-2 tournament.
“Hat’s off to Timberlake; much improved from when we saw them earlier,” said Kellogg coach Mike Martin, whose Wildcats beat the Tigers 72-50 on Jan. 10. “We got a nice lesson on when the other team plays harder.”
