The whimsical world of Dr. Seuss will come to vibrant life at 7 tonight as Christian Youth Theater North Idaho's "Seussical the Musical" opens on the Midge and Pepper Smock Family Theatre stage at the Kroc Center.
This high-energy, family-friendly production features a talented local cast, bringing beloved Dr. Seuss characters to the stage in a colorful musical adventure filled with heart, humor and unforgettable songs. With music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and directed by Presley Siemens, "Seussical" weaves together favorite stories including "Horton Hears a Who!," "Gertrude McFuzz" and "Horton Hatches the Egg" into one imaginative and uplifting theatrical experience.
"Seussical" follows Horton the Elephant as he discovers a tiny speck of dust containing the citizens of Whoville and makes a courageous promise to protect them, no matter the cost. Guided by the mischievous Cat in the Hat (Paislee Dunbar), audiences will journey from the Jungle of Nool to Whoville in a story that celebrates loyalty, perseverance and the power of believing in others.
“Horton’s personality and character are what make him so admirable,” Ian Sadler, who plays Horton, said in a Wednesday news release. “He only wants what’s best for those around him, which reflects his true, admirable self. Horton, as a character, reflects God’s image to love everyone.”
The production features 79 performers ages 8-18. Audiences can expect energetic choreography, imaginative costumes and dynamic staging that transform the theater into a Seussian world bursting with color and creativity.
“The Cat in the Hat brings a sense of silliness to all of the stories," Dunbar said. "She makes everything playful and even adds a bit of mischief. Even though the Cat can be a little troublesome, she makes you appreciate what you have!”
At its core, "Seussical the Musical" delivers the message that “a person’s a person, no matter how small.” Its themes of inclusion, empathy and determination resonate with audience members of all ages, making it enjoyable for families, school groups and theater lovers alike.
Performances run through March 1.
The Kroc Center is at 1765 W. Golf Course Road, Coeur d'Alene.
