6A DISTRICT 1 WRESTLING: Coeur d'Alene wins first district title since 2014

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Coeur d’Alene Vikings won their first district wrestling championship since 2014 on Friday, edging the Post Falls Trojans at the 6A District 1 tournament at Viking Court. 

Micah Miller (98 pounds), Rocco White (113), Justus Peregrina (120) and Brock Armstrong (190) won district titles for Coeur d’Alene, which totaled 379 points. 

“Winning it (districts) is not the goal; the goal is getting kids to state,” said Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat, whose Vikings qualified 11 to state, with nine others up for at-large berths. “But winning it, you’ve done your job. The ultimate goal is to get guys on that bus that can win matches at state.”

Post Falls, which had won 11 straight district titles, was second with 374.5 points. 

“Just guys scrapping, and doing what we needed to do,” Moffat said. “We had a little more depth, probably.

Tristan Mendenhall (106), Ryker Allen (126), Matthew Hamilton (132), Sawyer Sage (138), Titus Wise (144), Judah Brazle (150), Colton Austin (157), Damion Hamilton (165), Landon Moore (175) and Xander Scholes (285) won district titles for Post Falls. 

“It was a good day for us getting 14 through, and they all wrestled well,” second-year Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “I thought we wrestled really, really well and Coeur d’Alene had more points. Man, they’ve got some depth, but I thought our guys wrestled well.”

Lake City’s lone champion was senior James Vincent (215), who trailed Rylan Peterson of Coeur d’Alene 6-1 before pinning him early in the third period. 

“James created a scramble, came out on top and pinned him,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Good job on James to not panic; he was patient and didn't force anything.” 

The top two placers in each weight qualify for state next Friday and Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa. One at-large berth statewide is available at each weight.
