MARCH NIBJ: Equipping employees for a better tomorrow — Connecting education to employer demand

Whether entering the workforce or pivoting careers, Idaho’s rapidly evolving job market has placed greater emphasis on training programs to prepare workers for in-demand industries.
Preparing and equipping workers to meet those challenges has become a growing focus across Idaho through workforce development programs and training initiatives.
Among the biggest initiatives aimed at connecting individuals with career opportunities is the Idaho Workforce Development Council, which seeks to fill in-demand careers through training and education. The government entity partners with dozens of programs throughout the state to offer Idahoans assistance as they pursue employment — connecting workers, educators and employers in a collaborative environment designed to strengthen the workforce.
“We envision a future where Idaho’s robust and prepared workforce meets the needs of our unique communities and employers,” the council's mission statement reads.
The IWDC was established in 2017 by the Office of the Governor to improve the quality and accessibility of workforce education and training programs throughout Idaho by coordinating public outreach and statewide workforce efforts.
One of its resource hubs, Idaho LAUNCH, aims to match skills to employer needs while also offering training opportunities for skills individuals may be lacking. The state grant program helps Idahoans pay for education or job-training programs that lead to in-demand careers.
In a 2022 special session, $80 million was allocated for in-demand career training, according to the Office of the Governor, which allowed for the creation of Idaho Launch, where individuals can receive up to $8,000 to use toward training and career-advancement opportunities.
The platform is based around workforce trends, labor data and insights into future job growth across the state, creating a centralized research hub for individuals seeking to advance or transition their professional career.
Programs like Idaho LAUNCH are designed to assist individual career advancement, while also addressing labor shortages across key industries in the state.
Idaho LAUNCH used survey data from Idaho employers from every region of the state, for which they received 845 responses. The responses helped identify the most relevant short-term skills that would help employees be successful in their industries.
Through that data, the entity showcases opportunities and training throughout the state that are in high demand, such as Class A CDL training, welding 101 training, massage therapy certification and more.
