The Columbia Falls boys basketball team will head into the Western A divisional tourney next week on a six-game winning streak as they’re playing the best ball of the season.

The Wildcats beat Whitefish Feb. 17 at home 63-47 and then Bigfork on the road 50-44 to cap off the regular season at 14-4 overall and 10-2 in conference play.

They tied Ronan for the best conference record, but the Chiefs had the tiebreak as they lost to the Cats by 3 but the Cats lost to them by 6 in head-to-head matchups this year.

Against Bulldogs, junior Jory Hill led the way with 17 points, followed by Bjorn Pedersen with 11 and a host of other players contributing in knocking off the Bulldogs at home.

On the road against Bigfork, Easton Brooks had a great night with 18, followed by Jett Pitts with 14. Hill went 4 for 4 at the line at the end of the game to ice the win.

The Cats had 29 rebounds against Bigfork.

They’ve really been doing the little things right in the past few games. Limiting turnovers, taking good shots and hitting key free throws, noted coach Chris Finberg.

It’s a great recipe for success and one they’ll have to adhere to heading into the Western A divisional tourney in Hamilton.

The Cats weren’t sure who they would play just yet. The Southwest is knotted up at the top with one game left to play Tuesday after press time noted Finberg. They could play Butte Central, Dillon or Frenchtown depending on how the end of the season shakes out in the Southwest.

The Cats have already beaten Dillon earlier this season, but their last loss was to Frenchtown.

What they do know is they play at noon Thursday, March 5. Like the girls, the top four teams head to state in Great Falls the following weekend.

Friday was Richard Day

I first met Richard Garlough in 1998. He was one of the first features I wrote for the newspaper. He was walking around town and I think I stopped and took his picture, I can’t remember exactly, but he got to telling me his story about how he used to smoke a couple packs of Camels a day, had a heart attack before the age of 60 and had to change his ways after open heart surgery.

Family talks history, future of Cattle Baron Supper Club with plans to rebuild

Sunny skies welcomed an unusually warm day on Feb. 5 at the intersection of BIA Route 3 and U.S. Highway 89 on the Blackfeet Reservation. But a chilly breeze kept things from being temperate as Charlene and Bob Burns surveyed the cleared space of what had, for more than three decades, been the Cattle Baron Supper Club. The structure burned to the ground in an electrical fire on a very windy night on Jan. 14.
