POC weed board hosting free workshop

The Pend Oreille County Noxious Weed Board is once again hosting its free Neighborhood Cost Share Workshop, which includes a full line-up of expert speakers.
“This workshop is held yearly to kick off our Neighborhood Cost Share program in the spring, and this provides our landowners an opportunity to manage their weeds more cost-effectively and meet their weed management goals,” said Loretta Nichols, coordinator for the Weed Board. “There will be a lot of great information from speakers this year, and we are excited to see everyone.”
The NCS program provides cost-share with Pend Oreille County landowners who form weed management groups at 50 percent of the management costs, with a cap of $500 per group. Eligible costs include applying weed prevention principles such as fertilizing, planting competitive vegetation, applying herbicides, hiring contractors and more. Applications are accepted annually in March and April. Cost-share funds are limited, so it is first-come, first-served basis.
The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 28 at the Camas Center in Cusick, as well as virtually. This year’s topics include invasive grass management, lawn and turf care, toxic plant awareness, weed identification, weed-control laws, and agricultural soil health. There will be refreshments available for attendees, a $5 taco bar lunch and a door prize raffle. Pesticide recertification credits will be available for Idaho and Washington attendees who hold a pesticide license.
Registration is required for this event at pendoreille.gov/weed-board/page/2026-ncs-workshop. For more information, call 509-447-2402 or email [email protected].
The Weed Board is able to provide the NCS program to the community thanks to the Colville National Forest of the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. The grant is through Title II – the Secure Rural Schools program – which provides funding to counties across the country for schools, roads and other municipal services, such as noxious weed control.
