PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lewiston rallies in second half to defeat Sandpoint for district title
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 day, 13 hours AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | February 26, 2026 1:00 AM
Lewiston 72, Sandpoint 54
LEWISTON — Junior Derrick Chamberlain recorded 12 points and three rebounds, senior Logan Roos a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds to go along with a team-high three steals, and the No. 2 Bulldogs led at halftime, but were ultimately defeated by the No. 1 Bengals in Tuesday night's 5A District 1-2 championship game in front of a packed crowd at Bengal Court.
Junior Brock Yarbrough had nine points, including a 4-point play in the fourth quarter, and four rebounds, junior Knox Williams had seven points, including a 3-pointer, and dished out a game-high seven assists, and senior Tyler Weisz registered five points and three assists for Sandpoint, which led 26-23 heading into the locker room. The Bulldogs played without seniors Kingston Corbett and Dallen Williams, which limited their rotation to just seven players.
Lewis-Clark State College commit Royce Fisher netted a career-high 35 points, including five 3-pointers, and posted six rebounds and four steals for Lewiston (20-3), which used a 49-28 second-half scoring tally to seal the deal. Jordan Walker had 16 points, including two 3-pointers, and Blaze Hepburn scored all 12 of his points from beyond the arc on the night. The Bengals, formerly of the state's 6A classification, had 12 3-pointers and 18 assists in total as they captured their second district title since joining the league two seasons ago.
"Pleased with how the kids came out and competed; we were down a few baskets early and they did a good job rallying to get the lead," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said of his team's first-half effort. "We knew Lewiston was going to come out in the second half and get after it a little bit more. Royce is such a great, dominant player and did so much damage in second... Lewiston's a good team, hats off to them and their coaching staff for a great season and a district championship."
Senior Caiden Gion also had five points and came away with two steals, junior Logan Iverson had five points of his own, and the two both had one 3-pointer each for Sandpoint (11-12), which will be tasked with defeating Moscow tonight at 6 p.m. at Les Rogers Court in a 5A District 1-2 loser-out game, with the winner advancing to a state play-in game on Saturday at Grangeville High. No. 4 Moscow (4-19) defeated No. 3 Lakeland (8-13) by a score of 65-52 in their loser-out game Tuesday night.
"Moscow's going to be tough; they have some dynamic players," coach Love noted. "They're well-coached, so we're going to have to be ready."
