The 2026 edition of Ag Mag showcases the diverse agricultural landscape of western Montana, highlighting local producers, seasonal cycles and emerging challenges within the industry.
We profile aerial applicator Wacey Cathey, who operates Black Gulch Aviation. Cathey spends long days flying low over fields to apply fertilizers, herbicides and pest treatments across the region. Cathey, who grew up around aviation, now balances his work in the air with helping manage the family’s cattle operation.
Also in the spotlight is the Lake family of Ronan, longtime potato growers preparing for spring shipping. Their operation stores seed potatoes through winter and supplies commercial processors for products ranging from chips to fries.
Cherry growers also report a positive outlook after a mild winter spared orchards from the deep freezes that can wipe out half a crop. Producers remain cautiously optimistic as harvest approaches.
Ag Mag also features local youth participating in livestock events and highlights the Montana Farmers Union’s Western Women’s Conference, where women from across the state gathered for workshops, leadership development and community building focused on agricultural careers.
