WALLACE — Shoshone County Sheriff William Eddy resigned this morning, ending a tumultuous three-and-a-half-month tenure leading the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office.

In the email, which went out to county officials just before 10 a.m., Eddy cited medical reasons, including his doctor’s recommendations and stress, as the primary factors behind his decision.

"While it has been an honor and a privilege to serve the residents of Shoshone County, I must place my health and well‑being, and that of my family, as my highest priority," Eddy said. "Serving Shoshone County in this capacity has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life. I am grateful for the support I have received from county leadership and the citizens of this community."

He was appointed by the Shoshone County commissioners in November following the resignation of former Sheriff Holly Lindsey, who stepped down in October after a traffic incident that resulted in misdemeanor charges.

During his time in office, Eddy faced several major challenges, including severe flooding, a windstorm, and the Dec. 26 shooting at the SCSO in downtown Wallace.

In January, the police chiefs of Pinehurst, Kellogg and Osburn issued a 2,000-word letter of no confidence in Eddy, citing concerns over his leadership and communication.

Rumors of his resignation began circulating roughly two weeks ago. Questions directed to Eddy and the commissioners went largely unanswered until the announcement was made today.

Eddy’s resignation must be formally accepted by the commissioners. Once accepted, the Shoshone County Democratic Central Committee will have 15 days to select three candidates for the commissioners to consider. The commissioners then have 15 days to choose one. If they fail to do so, the decision returns to the party committee, which will again have 15 days to act.

If no appointment is made during that process, the decision falls to the Idaho governor.

During the previous appointment cycle, the committee named Eddy, Chris Rice and Spike Angle as finalists.

Eddy is the fifth administrator to leave the department since Lindsey’s resignation in October.

This is a developing story.
