Nomad Global Communication Solutions, Inc. has merged with a technology company that focuses on manufacturing in weapons and military electronics.

Nomad, which began in 2002 in the Flathead Valley, has merged with Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc., which is headquartered in San Diego, California.

Designer and manufacturer of mobile command centers, Nomad has seen explosive growth since its humble beginnings with four partners working out of a barn in Creston. The company has plants in Kalispell and Libby, and in announcing its merger, said it will maintain its Montana and Alabama footprints.

The merger marks the next chapter in Nomad’s growth, building on the Montana-based company’s 23 years of service to defense, federal, state, local, and commercial customers, the company said.

“Nomad has built its reputation on reliability under pressure and delivering when it matters most,” said Will Schmautz, Nomad senior vice president, in a statement. “This merger allows us to remain true to who we are while giving our customers added confidence through long-term scale, stability, and support. We stay the same forward-thinking, agile Nomad our customers trust, only stronger.”

Joining forces with Kratos strengthens the company’s ability to support customers by combining Nomad’s expertise and deep understanding of complex mobile operations missions with Kratos’ scale and long-term backing, the company said in a release.

“Nomad brings a highly respected brand, differentiated capabilities, and a proven track record in mission-critical environments,” Eric DeMarco, Kratos president and CEO said. “This investment supports Kratos’ strategy of partnering with trusted teams and amplifying businesses that already perform at a high level.”

Nomad includes over 200 engineers, craftspeople and tech experts who have shipped hundreds of specialty vehicles and trailers to customers in all 50 states and internationally, according to the company’s website.

Kratos in February secured a $61 million modification for a contract with the U.S. Navy related to target drone technology.
