STATE HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: Plenty to fight for ... Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene in trophy hunt in 6A

Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 hours, 18 minutes AGO
| February 28, 2026 1:30 AM

NAMPA — It was a good start.

Now the finish, that might be something to see.

Defending state 6A champion Post Falls will send seven to the semifinals today, while Coeur d’Alene is right in the mix as well with six in the semis after the first day of the state wrestling championships Friday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

Sophomore Tristan Mendenhall (106), senior Gage Loftin (113), senior Logan Loaiza (120), junior Matthew Hamilton (132), senior Damion Hamilton (165), sophomore Sawyer Sage (138) and senior Xander Scholes (285) advanced to the semifinals for the Trojans, who are second with 114 points heading into the final day.

“We’ve still got 14 guys fighting, and that’s a good day,” Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “Meridian is having a good tournament, but we’ve still got guys fighting for medals and seven bidding for the finals. There’s still a lot of points out there.”

Coeur d’Alene sophomore Micah Miller (98), senior Rocco White (113), senior Justus Peregrina (120), sophomore Cole Armstrong (126), sophomore Logan Nitti (150) and junior Brock Armstrong (190) advanced to the semis for Coeur d’Alene, which is third with 107 points.

Meridian leads with 191 points.

“Micah, Justus and Rocco looked really good today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “I really liked the way we approached things today. It’s going to be tight between second and fourth. Meridian has too many numbers to compete, but it’s going to be a fight. We need to punch some guys into the finals. If we can win one match in the consolation round, we’ve got a shot.”

Post Falls had six wrestlers fall in the quarterfinal round.

“We didn’t have a great quarterfinal round,” Zender said. “The funny thing was, the guys wrestled well, but we just didn’t score enough points. I don’t think it was a lack of effort and our guys were trying to score points. But we just came up on the short end of a few matches. It just wasn’t our round tonight.”

Lake City senior James Vincent advanced to the semifinals at 215.

5A

Two-time champion Carson Leonard (126) and defending champion Zach Teal (106) advanced to the semifinals for Lakeland, which is fifth after the first day with 84 points.

Senior Cole Cooper (144), junior Gage McWatters (175) and freshman Emmit Rivadeneira (215) also advanced to the semifinals for Lakeland, which finished fourth last season.

Minico of Rupert leads with 104 points.

4A

Senior Wyatt Carey, who has finished runner-up the past two years, advanced to the semifinals at 113 pounds for Timberlake, which is sixth with 80.5 points.

Juniors Jacob Rade (120) and Gaige Haines (132) also advanced to the semifinals for Timberlake.

Snake River leads the tournament with 160.5 points.

3A

Junior Kelby Harvey (144 pounds) and seniors Zach David (150), Aiden Yearout (157) and Zack Sotin (190) advanced to the semifinals for St. Maries, which is fifth with 58 points, 2.5 behind Ririe for fourth after the first day.

“I’m pretty pleased with where we’re at right now,” St. Maries coach Dennis Humphrey said. “We’ll regroup and get after it again tomorrow. A trophy is still in reach if we wrestle to our capability.”

St. Maries sophomore Gabe Halloran, who also qualified at 157, injured his right knee during a workout on Thursday, and was unable to compete on Friday.

“He was going to give it a go, but ultimately we opted to hold him out,” Humphrey said. “He would have won a few matches for us down here. Hopefully we show up ready to roll tomorrow.”

Sophomore Lowden White (106), junior Colton Storey (113), junior Kevin Watson (113), senior Johnny Stovern (120), sophomore Carsun Hinklemann (126), senior Chase Scribner (144) and senior Jayce Haynes (144) advanced to the semifinals for Kellogg, which is second with 94.5 points.

Malad leads with 129 points.

GIRLS

Coeur d’Alene senior Brooklyn Anderson (190 pounds) and sophomore Murphee Balich (100) advanced to the 6A semifinals after going unbeaten on the first day of the girls tournament at the Ford Idaho Center.

Post Falls sophomores Kahli Brown (135) and Kassie Voss (235) also advanced to the semifinals for the Trojans, who are seventh with 35 points.

“Both Kahli and Kassie just wrestled really smart and savvy today,” Post Falls girls coach Abel De La Rosa said. “They’re just powerful wrestlers and got to the spot they wanted to and made it work today. If we can get them into the finals, we’re in the running for a team trophy, which would be big for us.”

Timberlake senior Shelby Garten advanced to the semis at 130 after finishing runner-up at 126 last year.

Eagle leads the one-class girls tournament with 73 points.
