Sled dog races canceled due to lack of snow

MCCALL — This year's Idaho Sled Dog Challenge has been canceled. 

"After careful consideration and assessment, we regret to announce that due to dismal snow levels and unsafe trail conditions, the 100 Mile and 300 Mile races for this year's Idaho Sled Dog Challenge are officially canceled," said a letter from organizers. "We assessed the trails yesterday, and critical safety areas are either down to gravel or have only a few inches of snow, with no solid base to ensure a safe course for our dogs and mushers. Despite tracking weather forecasts closely, we have low confidence that conditions will improve in time to provide a safe trail."

The races were scheduled to begin Feb. 2.

"The Warm Lake Stage Race is still under observation with a final decision made by January 15th, and we will keep you updated on any changes or decisions regarding that event," a press release said. "Please do the snow dance that we need!"
