PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Sandpoint scares off Sequim with strong fourth quarter
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 2 hours, 41 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 2, 2026 1:00 AM
Sandpoint 56, Sequim 40
SANDPOINT — Down a couple of key contributors on the evening, Sandpoint needed a boost from a few players to start off the new year with a victory — and that's exactly what they got.
Senior Logan Roos made his presence known down low, compiling a double-double of 18 points and 17 rebounds to go along with seven blocks and three steals — all team-high's — while junior Derrick Chamberlain posted 13 points and 10 rebounds on his way to a double-double of his own as the Bulldogs overcame some foul trouble and outscored the Wolves 12-4 in the final frame to start off the GESA Winter Shootout with a 16-point win Thursday night at Wenatchee High.
Senior Dallen Williams netted a career-high eight points, including a three-pointer, sophomore Alec Lieuallen scored the first four points of his varsity career, and junior Knox Williams collected a season-high 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a three-pointer of his own for Sandpoint, which led by as much as 14 points in the first half before Sequim closed the gap to 44-38 with just over six minutes to go in regulation.
The Bulldogs eventually settled down and regained control after a 12-0 run that included an acrobatic offensive rebound by Roos and a pass to Chamberlain, who converted through contact underneath, to make it a 54-38 game. Roos then blocked a shot on the opposite end of the floor and sent a pass up court to junior Logan Iverson, who made a layup to push the lead to 18 points.
Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said he was proud of his team's resilience, especially after a third quarter where the Wolves turned up the tempo and outscored the Bulldogs 11-9. Roos and Chamberlain led the charge, protecting the rim and disrupting shots when Sandpoint needed it most down the stretch.
"They really started to use their height to their advantage and the rule of verticality in that fourth quarter, especially coming over in help (defense)," coach Love said of Roos and Chamberlain. "Knox Williams also did a good job of being physical out of the guard spot... he's a good 6-3, has a good reach and is a heck of an athlete. The fact that he was in there getting some boards was crucial."
Iverson chipped in five points, including a three-pointer, and dished out four assists while Roos delivered three assists of his own in the Bulldogs' winning effort.
"The kids did a really good job of bringing their best effort — we really limited their offensive opportunities," coach Love noted. "We got into a little bit of a track meet in the third quarter and were taking 'okay' shots instead of great shots, but we did a much better job with that in the fourth and it all came together."
Sequim, which is now 3-4 on the year and did not record a three-point basket in the loss, was led by Solomon Sheppard, who tallied a game-high 23 points and three blocks.
Sandpoint (6-3) will look to capture another non-league victory today when they'll battle it out with Cheney of the Greater Spokane League at Eastmont High.
