PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Symons goes coast-to-coast late as Vikings top Ferris

SPOKANE — Caden Symons finished off a length-of-the-court rush with a driving layup with 6 seconds to go as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings finished strong to beat the Ferris Saxons 58-57 on Friday afternoon.
Symons took the inbound pass on the right sideline, then drove down the center of the court, and flipped up a right-handed layup from the left side of the rim and kissed off the glass and in.
“All we did was made sure Caden Symons got the ball, and we got out of his way, and he did the rest,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kent Leiss said. “You can’t stop him; he’s so big and strong.”
Symons, the Evansville signee, finished with 37 points for Coeur d’Alene (5-5).
Cole Floyd, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, led Ferris (3-6) with 21 points. Bijou Edwards-Keys gave the Saxons a 57-56 lead with a driving left-handed layin with 10 seconds left.
After Symons’ go-ahead basket, the Vikings stole the inbounds pass and ran out the clock.
Ferris went on a run to build a nine-point lead midway through the third quarter, before the Vikings clamped down on defense and fought back into the game.
“We need more (scoring) from the rest of the guys,” Leiss said. “But what they all did was play real good defense the last 12 minutes of the game — much better than they did the first 20 minutes.”
Coeur d’Alene opens 6A Inland Empire League play Tuesday at Post Falls.

POST FALLS — Playing their fourth game in five days, and playing without one of their top players, the Trojans played a strong first half, then held on to beat the Falcons of Liberty Lake at The Arena.
Junior Cashton Bodman scored 32 points, senior Jaxon Lysne 27 for Post Falls (9-3), who played without senior Connor Carver (ankle).
“We just played out of character tonight,” Post Falls coach Jayson Ulrich said. “But when we needed big buckets, we got our mojo back.Jaxon and Cashton got us some big buckets, and knocked down free throws late. We'll take a win, whether it’s pretty or ugly.”
Joey Duff scored 16 points, Caden Andreas 14 for Ridgeline (3-6). Ulrich praised his team’s defense on Andreas, the Falcons’ top scorer.
“They're pretty solid,” Ulrich said of Ridgeline, “but our defense was horrendous in the second half. Night and day from what we got so good at in the East Idaho tournament. We came out guns a’blazing in the first half, and for some reason we got complacent. We did enough to win the game.”
Carver rolled his right ankle in Wednesday’s championship game against Highland of Pocatello at the East Idaho Shootout in Idaho Falls.
Ulrich is optimistic Carver could return on Tuesday, when Post Falls opens 6A Inland Empire League play at home vs. Coeur d’Alene.

WELLPINIT, Wash. — Junior Furyus Louie scored seven of his 13 points in the third quarter, and the Knights, leading by two points at halftime, outscored the Redskins 21-10 in the period en route to the win on the first night of the Wellpinit tournament.
Senior Tyson Charley scored a game-high 17 points for Lakeside (5-0), playing for the first time since Dec. 9. Senior Hallah Peone added 16 points.
Wellpinit is 5-4.
Lakeside plays Mary Walker of Springdale, Wash., today at 4:30 to conclude tourney play.
