PREP WRESTLING: Coeur d'Alene's Armstrong wins at Rollie Lane

NAMPA — Coeur d’Alene junior Brock Armstrong beat Blaise Turner of American Falls 7-2 in the 190-pound championship match of the 26th annual Rollie Lane Invitational at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa. 

“He’s a really good hand fighter,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said of Armstrong. “He didn’t give up a takedown the entire tournament because it’s very hard to get through his hands and to his legs. He’s just not giving up any takedowns right now.”

Sophomore Micah Miller (fifth at 98) and senior Rylan Peterson (eighth at 285) also placed for Coeur d’Alene, which finished seventh with 139.5 points.  

“Rylan just continues to get better and better,” Moffat said. “The more matches he gets, the better he’ll be. He’s still getting his feet wet, but this should be a good confidence booster. He’s big, strong and athletic and continued to get better throughout the weekend. Micah had a really good tournament as well, but ran into a tough kid in the semis. He’s got a good upside as well.”

Lakeland junior Carson Leonard (fourth at 120), Timberlake senior Wyatt Carey (fifth at 113) and Lakeland junior Gage McWatters (eighth at 175) rounded out area placers. 

Gonzaga Prep won with 196.5 points. 

Johnson trims down, takes

third for Lake City in Classic

SPOKANE VALLEY — While some kids might have indulged over the holidays, Lake City senior Connor Johnson might have changed his course when it comes to the rest of the wrestling season. 

Johnson, at 132 pounds for the first time this season, finished third in the Pacific Northwest Classic at University High, beating West Valley’s Ryder Markezic 6-2 in the third-place match. 

“He looked really good,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “He came back from winter break weighing four pounds less. At Tri-State, he felt a little small at 138, so he watched his diet over the holidays. He’s in a really good position.” 

Senior Tucker Bridwell (fourth at 165), senior Josh Macdonald (fourth at 157) and sophomore Caden Ramey (fourth at 144) also placed for Lake City, which finished seventh with 112 points.  

“The kids wrestled hard today,” Owen said. “We made some technical mistakes, but it feels like we’re headed in the right direction. We looked a lot better than we did before Christmas break, so progress is being made.” 

Lake City will compete in the River City Duals at Post Falls High next Friday and Saturday. 

Post Falls finishes 1-2

at The CLASH

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Post Falls went 1-2 in the Second Bracket to finish seventh in The CLASH at the La Crosse Center. 

Post Falls beat Bettendorf (Iowa) 37-33, then fell to Shakopee (Minn.) 42-30 and Washington (Ill.) 37-25. 

“We knew what we were getting into and that there was going to be some really tough teams,” Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “It was good for our kids to see there’s a bigger, badder wolf somewhere else and they can always get better.” 

Senior Damion Hamilton and his brother, junior Matthew Hamilton, went 4-1 in the tournament for Post Falls, which hosts Thunder Ridge of Idaho Falls on Thursday, before hosting the River City Duals on Friday and Saturday.

“Both of them had a really good week,” Zender said. “They both competed really hard.” 

St. Maries wins 

Backwoods Brawl

PRIEST RIVER — Kelby Harvey (144 pounds), Zach David (150), Amado Stewart (157) and Aiden Yearout (165) captured championships for St. Maries, which claimed the boys team title at the Backwoods Brawl at Priest River High. 

St. Maries won the team title with 197.5 points. 

“It was good to see some new competition from Washington and Montana,” St. Maries coach Dennis Humphrey said. “It’s always a question how we will come out of the holidays. The kids came out ready to wrestle.” 

Julian Moffit of Lakeside (190) and Priest River’s Grady Caudill (106), Tadgh McLaimtaig (113) and Liam Pettitt (126) also won individual titles. 

• GIRLS 

Lake City takes three seconds at Rogers tourney 

SPOKANE — Poppy Schenk (140), Aspen Kiser (145) and Katie Rippentrop (170) each finished second for the Timberwolves at the M2 Mallet tournament at Rogers High. 

Lake City girls coach Nathan DeLeon said Kiser was leading with some 15 seconds remaining before her opponent took her to her back and scored the go-ahead points. 

“The girls wrestled well,” DeLeon said. “It was nice to see some competition we don’t normally see. I was proud of Katie for making the finals; she’s been progressing well throughout the season.” 

Lake City returns to action next Friday and Saturday at the River City Duals at Post Falls High. 

Sandpoint's Marti second at

Rollie Lane Invitational

NAMPA — Sandpoint senior Lilli Marti was the top local finisher in the Rollie Lane Invitational, finishing runner-up at 235 at the Ford Idaho Center. 

Timberlake senior Shelby Garten was third at 125. 

Post Falls junior Kahli Brown (fourth at 135), senior Emma Younger (fifth at 120) and sophomore Kassie Voss (fifth at 235) placed for the Trojans, who finished 16th. 

Lakeland junior Hunter Edmondson was sixth at 115. 

Coeur d’Alene senior Brooklyn Armstrong was sixth at 190. 

Thunder Ridge of Idaho Falls won the tournament with 196 points. 

Barta, Price win at 

Backwoods Brawl

PRIEST RIVER — St. Maries sophomore JoJane Barta (125 pounds) and freshman Grace Price (155) won titles at the Backwoods Brawl at Priest River High. 

St. Maries won the seven-team tourney with 38.5 points.
