LOCAL WATCH: Williams leads Orediggers to pair of conference wins
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 2 days, 12 hours AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 6, 2026 1:00 AM
Asher Williams, Montana Tech University Basketball
A 2025 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Asher, a 6-foot-6-inch freshman guard, led the No. 19 Orediggers in recent Frontier Conference road wins over Bismarck State (90-68) and Dickinson State (77-57). The former Badger standout and four-time All-Intermountain League recipient scored a team-high 22 points (8-12 FG, 3-3 FT), which included a 3-for-4 effort from behind the three-point line, and added two rebounds across 18 minutes off the bench in the victory over the Mystics. In the victory over the Blue Hawks, the former four-time All-State honoree netted a team-high 14 points (5-7 FG, 4-4 FT) and tallied two rebounds, an assist and a steal across a career-high 22 minutes of action off the bench. Across 15 regular season games this year, excluding exhibition wins over Montana and Northwestern Polytechnic of Alberta, Williams now has 143 points (9.5 per game), 29 rebounds, six assists and eight steals and is shooting 58% from the floor (47-for-81), which includes a 40% effort from beyond the arc (12-for-30), and is an impressive 37-for-48 (77%) from the charity stripe. Montana Tech (12-3), winners of their last six games after a three-game skid, will return to Kelvin Sampson Court at Valley Bank Arena on Jan. 9 and 10 for a pair of conference matchups against the University of Providence and MSU-Northern, respectively, as they look to continue their dominance under the direction of 1997 Bonners Ferry High graduate Adam Hiatt.
