Morning road conditions will drive districts' closure decisions

SANDPOINT — A Tuesday snowstorm prompted the cancelling of events in the West Bonner County School District, but no decision has been made regarding school closures for Wednesday, Jan. 7.
LPOSD staff including Superintendent Dr. Becky Meyer will begin analyzing the road conditions, which are the main factor in the decision, at 4 a.m. on Wednesday. The decision is made by 5 a.m. when the first buses depart and cooks are set to arrive, to give staff and families time to prepare, according to the district's website.
During the Dec. 17 closure, WBCSD Superintendent Kim Spacek said he began receiving calls early in the morning about poor conditions, which drove the closure. WBCSD policy states that if fewer than 50% of the bus routes can be run safely, then school will be closed, and a decision will be announced prior to 6 a.m.
If road conditions are expected to improve later in the day, both districts have the ability to delay the start of school by two hours. Under this decision, dismissal times would remain the same in both districts.
If schools do close it would be the second of the school year for Bonner County, which saw schools close on Dec. 17 due to an intense windstorm throughout the region. Idaho Code allows schools 11 hours of emergency closure per year; any time over that limit will need to be made up.
The districts will announce any closure or delay over social media and through the local news media once a decision is made.
