PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sandpoint caps off undefeated GSL slate with dominant win over Mt. Spokane

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 6, 2026 1:00 AM

MEAD — When Sandpoint needed a second-half surge to pull away, it was Jordyn Tomco who came through.

The junior guard hit both of her 3-pointers and rallied for 14 of her team-high 16 points in the third quarter and the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Wildcats by a 21-9 margin in the frame to capture their seventh consecutive victory and fifth over a Greater Spokane League school this year during a non-league matchup held Saturday night at Mt. Spokane High.

"When I think of Jordyn, I know she is capable of doing that — she's always been a spark for us," Sandpoint High head coach Madi Schoening said. "Proud of her mental fortitude to be able to come out after a scoreless half and perform the way she did. You can tell when she is in the zone is going to take care of business."

Junior Brecken Mire tallied 15 points, including a 3-pointer of her own, and recorded a team-high three assists and a team-high four steals as Sandpoint got out to a 19-9 lead by halftime after holding Mt. Spokane to just three points in the first quarter.

"When we were able to talk about things at halftime, the girls then started to figure it out and made a lot better choices and decisions," coach Schoening said of the team's second-half shot selection, also noting that most of the team's points came via the free throw line in the first half. "We talked about the third quarter being our "defense" since the offense wasn't clicking as well as usual, and the girls really circled around Jordyn to get the job done."

Sophomore Willow Betz collected a team-high nine rebounds and a team-high two blocks, Tomco pulled down eight rebounds and had three steals, and junior Livia Driggs had eight points and seven rebounds in the winning effort for the Lady Bulldogs, which outrebounded the Lady Wildcats by a margin of 39-27 and had 12 steals overall.

Bailey Tampien had 10 points, Dakota Wyss nine points for Mt. Spokane, which was limited to under 10 points of scoring per quarter and is now 2-8 on the season.

The win over the Lady Wildcats marks a 5-0 record against GSL schools this season for Sandpoint. Coach Schoening said not only is that a remarkable feat in itself, but just being able to get five Spokane teams on the schedule is something that is rare.

"We don't always get to play this many because their schedules fill up so fast," coach Schoening noted. "To come out 5-0 is not something I would have expected and I am proud of the girls for accomplishing that. Beating GSL schools is no easy task, and they're excited to play us too. They recognize what we're doing up here."

Senior Jasmin Laing added a season-high six points and junior Carly Laybourne had six boards for Sandpoint (12-1), which will return to action today for a highly-anticipated 5A Inland Empire League matchup against Lakeland, which is 10-2 on the year. The Lady Bulldogs encourage fans to wear the best red to tonight's home game if they plan on attending.
