Tigers' Lulis surpasses 1,000-point mark

So you want to play a game of longball basketball? Be careful what you ask for when facing the St. Regis Tiger boys then.
Hitting 3-pointers from all points on the floor at Linderman Gym in Polson Friday, ending up with 13 treys canned by the time the game was done, coach Jesse Allan’s red-hot Tigers tore up the Pirate JV 70-53. Returning home to St. Regis Saturday, the Tigers improved to 2-0 in District 14C conference play and 6-0 overall with a 78-50 win over visiting Charlo Saturday.
In one of the bigger highlights of the weekend and the season, junior Conner Lulis surpassed the 1,000 points scored mark for his career and was honored with a special ceremony during the Charlo game.
Allan and the Tigers have two more home games on tap this week, hosting Alberton Friday and Western C power Seeley-Swan Saturday. The game with Seeley-Swan will be a battle between two of the best teams in the Western C division.
“Seeley is a strong team for sure,” Allan said. “Our guys are looking forward to that game.”
Allan said the game with the Polson JV, which was scheduled after Hot Springs was forced to cancel its boys season, was a good one for the Tigers to pick up. “The Polson JV is a talented bunch with some speed and size that we don’t see much of in our district,” he said. “But we hit 13 threes, if we shoot the ball that well, we’re pretty tough to beat.”
Lulis led the Tigers in Polson with 22 points including four 3-pointers, Isaac Kelly added 21 points with six treys, and Nathan Bohn was good for 12 points with another pair of 3-pointers.
In the win over Charlo, Bohn triggered the Tiger offense with 19 points, Lulis added 14, and Kelly and Barrett Bessette 11 apiece.
Allan said the Tigers created their opportunities against Charlo. “ We got off to a great start, were able to cause a little chaos and convert their turnovers to points at the other end.”
Allan praised Lulis’ 1,000-point milestone. “That’s a pretty big accomplishment for a kid who loves basketball and works his tail off every day in practice,” he said. “We’re pretty proud of him for sure.”
