Flathead High School theater students are bringing fire, fun, and fantasy to the stage with its upcoming production of “A Play About a Dragon” by Steph DeFerie, Jan. 14 and 15.
Set in the Middle Ages, the story follows a troupe of traveling actors who believe they’ve been hired to perform a play about a dragon — until they realize they’re expected to fight a real one. Chaos and comedy erupt as the bumbling performers stumble through sword fights, disguises and daring rescues in a story filled with clever twists, fearless heroes and one unforgettable dragon.
The 90-minute show combines slapstick humor and fantasy adventure with a nod to classic fairy-tale tropes. Expect sword fights that don’t go as planned, a bookish prince who’d rather read than rescue, a disguised noblewoman who outsmarts everyone, and an over-the-top dragon whose presence is more ridiculous than terrifying.
“Each character in the story is on their own quest. The director is on a quest for glory. The leading lady is looking for a husband and a way out of the troupe. The leading man is looking for answers. The young actress is trying to be noticed. The princess wants a normal life. The prince wants to prove his worth. And the dragon is looking for a snack,” FHS International Baccalaureate Acting 2 teacher Luke Johnson said.
Produced by Acting 2 students, the play is used as a learning experience to explore techniques in character development, physical storytelling, vocal dynamics and nonverbal communication.
“This cast has worked hard on this show and taken a lot of leadership in creating props, designing the set, creating costumes and making acting and ensemble choices,” said Johnson.
The cast includes Kylie Stednitz, Hudson Mills, Emmah Sawyer, Keelan Moore, Ava Plum, Tyler Tippey, Matthew Monen, Aubrie Mannon, Elisabeth Friess, Saphiera Croft and Bayliss Cummings.
The technical crew includes Paisley Boykin-Smith, Adalicia O'Brien, Jacob Linden, Matthew Ottman, Helena Pershall, Audrey Cozad, Emma Feeney, Jolee Pitts, Myla Johnson, Boston Jackson, Natalie Young, Szonja Czinner and Colin Lincoln.
