SANDPOINT — A sentencing hearing for a Sandpoint resident guilty of two felonies related to abuse of a child has been continued to Feb. 5 following a review of a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation.

Jacob Ronald Navarro, 34, pleaded guilty to felony charges of aggravated battery and injury to child Sept. 15. As a result of a pretrial settlement, four additional aggravated battery charges and one count of possession of a controlled substance were dismissed.

The pretrial settlement document indicates that the state will recommend a 10-year prison sentence — five years fixed, five years indeterminate. The sentence is recommended to run concurrently.

When a person is charged with determinate prison time, they are required to serve the duration of that sentence. After completing it, they may be eligible for parole, depending on the circumstances. If they do not qualify for parole, the court will impose additional indeterminate time, if given any.

Sentencing is scheduled to occur Feb. 5 at 1:30 p.m., where Navarro is expected to appear out of custody after posting a $100,000 bond.

Court documents indicate that Navarro was accused of inflicting violence upon the victim around November 2023, for which the victim suffered great bodily harm and disfigurement.

The abuse, according to court records, included striking the victim with a stake or stick. The incident was reported to law enforcement after a neighbor sheltered the youth, who told the neighbor he “feared for his life.”

Documents show that the victim suffered multiple instances of abuse and lasting scars.
