Under a new state program, individuals and businesses can make donations directly to School District 6 and, in turn, receive a corresponding tax credit for the same amount of the donation.

The program is applicable to any district in the state, but is capped statewide this year at $6 million. If 80% of 2025's credits are claimed, the aggregate amount will increase by 20% to 7,200,000 in 2026. If it is not met, the aggregate amount remains the same as the previous year.

The deadline to apply is fast approaching, as donations are needed by Jan. 15. The program is designed to fund innovative student programs at both Columbia Falls High School and its elementary schools.

If the tax credit isn’t claimed, the state will issue a full refund.

“Your donation will directly support the implementation of creative and forward-thinking approaches to education within our district. These contributions empower students with cutting-edge learning experiences, encourage staff to explore impactful teaching methods, and strengthen the future of our community through enhanced educational opportunities. We have numerous ideas ready to bring to life—your contribution can help turn these visions into reality. By participating, you’ll not only invest in the growth and development of our students but also enjoy the benefits of a tax credit for your generosity,” superintendent Cory Dziowgo said in a letter to potential donors last month.

According to state law, the donations can only be used for innovative school programs.

“A school district shall deposit retained donations into the school district's miscellaneous programs fund and shall limit the expenditure of the donation to expenditures for innovative educational programs of the school district,” state law notes.
