PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sandpoint girls fall after late Lakeland rally
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 day, 4 hours AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 8, 2026 1:00 AM
GIRLS
Lakeland 49, Sandpoint 42
SANDPOINT — Junior Brecken Mire registered a team-high 13 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, junior Jordyn Tomco had 12 points and six rebounds, and the pair both netted two 3-pointers as the Lady Bulldogs were defeated by the Lady Hawks in a 5A Inland Empire League matchup held Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.
Junior Carly Laybourne also found nylon from three-point range twice en route to a season-high 10 points and four rebounds for Sandpoint, which trailed 22-10 before closing the half on a 14-4 run that included a 3-point play from Mire and a triple by junior Livia Driggs, who had five points, four rebounds and a team-high three steals in the loss.
Lakeland started out the half on an 8-0 run to take a 34-24 lead, but Sandpoint battled back to a 45-42 contest with just over 1:30 remaining after a barrage of three-point baskets. Tomco nailed the would-be-game-tying trey late, but it was called off due to a moving screen, and the Lady Hawks converted down the stretch for the 7-point win.
"Defensively, we did our job for the most part, holding them to 49 points, but offensively, we can't score 42 and win a game — our two losses this year are coming from scoring 42 and 45 points," Sandpoint High head coach Madi Schoening said of her team, which is averaging 55.1 points per game this season. "Just things we have to get back to the drawing board on, offensively, and continue to work on and watch film on... I was impressed with Carly, she gave us a good lift with her three's in the second quarter and Jordyn's three's in the fourth were huge too to cut it close, but we just couldn't close the game out."
Karstyn Kiefer had a game-high 15 points and contributed three assists and three steals for Lakeland, which limited the Lady Bulldogs to just 18 points in the second half and are now 11-2 on the year.
Senior Jasmin Laing had two points, and Tomco, Mire and sophomore Willow Betz all produced two assists for Sandpoint (12-2), which will look to get back on track today when they travel to Moscow (8-4) for another 5A IEL battle. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Bears by a score of 62-40 earlier this season.
