Boundary County School District officials thanked the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho in a Jan. 8 press release for its continued support of its schools.

“In a small community like Boundary County, teamwork is everything,” they said. “For years, the Boundary County School District (BCSD) has found a dedicated partner in the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho. Through steady donations and cultural support, the Tribe is helping local students succeed.”

Investing in the Future

The Tribe’s impact extends beyond financial contributions.

“The Kootenai Tribe provides annual donations to the district, but they don’t just write a check and walk away,” the statement said. “We trust the input from the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho and honor their requests.”

Their funding has played a significant role in district improvements. As a result of the tribe’s donation, BCSD has bought updated books for the library, physical activity items and classroom sets of Sacajawea for fourth and fifth graders.

The Tribe has also helped fund mental health resources, construct new bleachers for the middle and high school, sponsor a classroom for the planned Valley View Elementary School, fund the softball field and complete the high school track.

More Than Just Funding

“The Kootenai Tribe has brought history and culture to life for BCSD students by sponsoring powerful presentations,” the statement said. “Students have learned through programs like Native Voice, Through the Eyes of a Friend and The Right to Dream.”

Officials highlighted one memorable event made possible through the partnership.

“One highlight was a visit from Randy’L Teton, the woman who served as the model for the Sacagawea U.S. dollar coin,” officials said. “These events help students understand the diverse history of the land they live on.”

A Seat at the Table

The district also looks to the Tribe for guidance on curriculum decisions.

“The district has invited Chairwoman Porter to provide input on state standards and the books used in classrooms,” officials said. “This collaboration ensures that the curriculum is respectful and inclusive of the Tribe’s heritage.”

Officials said the partnership is important to the district.

“We are thankful for the partnership, support and input from the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho,” the statement said. “Our goal is to support all students within our community.”

“As Boundary County School District looks toward the future, we will continue to collaborate with the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho to best serve our students.”
