Gookin gives nod to Sheckler

Coeur d’Alene attorney Dan Sheckler is Mayor Dan Gookin’s choice to fill Council Seat 3.
“The city is fortunate to have such a strong group of qualified applicants who truly care about our community. After weighing input from various sources, I believe Dan Sheckler brings the right experience and fresh perspective to serve our residents,” Gookin said in a press release Friday. “On behalf of the City Council, I’m eager to work with Dan as we continue to make Coeur d’Alene a city of excellence.”
Sheckler said he was humbled to receive the nomination and believes he'll fit in well on the council.
"If I am confirmed by the Council, I look forward to serving all the citizens of Coeur d’Alene to the best of my ability," Sheckler said. "I believe I am a good fit because I listen carefully to competing interests, respect established process and make fair, practical decisions grounded in the law and informed by community input."
He said the City Council plays a vital role in shaping city growth and development.
"Growth has always been an uncomfortable — but inevitable — part of living, working, and raising families in North Idaho," he said. "We can manage its impacts by focusing on infrastructure, police and fire services and long-term stewardship rather than short-term pressures."
Councilmembers on Thursday interviewed three finalists for the vacant seat: Sheckler, Tonya Coppedge and Todd Tondee.
“I think we had great applicants for the position — it was truly an honor to get to know and visit with each one of them,” Councilor Amy Evans said. “Dan has a lot to offer council, and I believe he'll be able to hit the ground running and will be a fair and reasonable voice for the citizens.”
Councilman Dan English agreed.
“All three were really strong candidates. They each had some particular things that they brought to the table,” English said. “Dan Sheckler came highly recommended. He has a good background that will be valuable to us.”
Councilor Christie Wood said she was pleased with the nomination.
“He's clearly a strong candidate, a true professional, someone who brings a wealth of experience to the position,” Wood said. “Even though he hasn't been in government work per se, he has a tremendous amount life and work experience. I think he's going to be an incredible addition to the council.”
Councilman Kenny Gabriel said it wasn’t an easy choice for Gookin.
“The mayor had a difficult decision as the other applicants did an awesome job during the interview process,” he said. “But he made it and I think it's a very good decision.”
Sheckler's nomination will be presented to the City Council for confirmation at its meeting Jan. 20. If confirmed, Sheckler will serve the remainder of the term for Seat 3, which runs through Jan. 4, 2028.
