Joanna Mae Barnes, 93, passed away on Jan. 6, 2026, at the North Valley Hospital in Whitefish.
Joanna was born on April 4, 1932, in Whitefish. Her parents were Vonda and Otto Howke. She lived her whole life in Whitefish. Working outside and taking care of flowers were some of things she loved. Joanna lived a full life. She was a First Lady of Whitefish, an active member of line dancing, and was also a penguin in the Winter Carnival for many years. She belonged to the Cowbells for several years. She also ran the farm to market in Whitefish. She loved gardening and sewing.
On Feb. 24, 1951, she married Raymond Barnes, and they were married for 41 years. They had four daughters and a son.
Joanna is survived by three daughters, Dianna (Robert) Widhalm from Valier, Lana (Tim) Bissell from Whitefish and Linda (Robert) Paul from Billings; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dale and Leonard Howke; two sisters, Sally Allen and Peggy Guile; her husband, Raymond; son, Micki; granddaughter, Erica; daughter, Connie Cady and son-in-law, Patrick Cady.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, with the viewing from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18. Services will be at Columbia Mortuary located at 1010 Fourth Ave. W. in Columbia Falls. Graveside rites will be held at Glacier Memorial Gardens right after the funeral.
