PREP BASKETBALL: Lakeland opens 5A IEL play with victory at Moscow

MOSCOW — Senior Jaron Yager had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead three Lakeland players into double figures, and the Hawks made nine 3-pointers en route to a 58-50 victory over the Moscow Bears in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both teams Saturday at Bear Den. 

Sophomore Austin Hocking hit four 3s and finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists for Lakeland (6-4). Senior Brayden Carrel scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, and also had 11 rebounds. 

“League wins are tough so I’m proud of our guys going on the road and grinding out this win,” Lakeland coach Caleb De Fabiis said. “Offensively, we were much better than our previous game and did a good job sharing the ball. Defensively, we didn’t play to our standard. We gave up way too many second-chance points and we will have to clean that up if we want to compete in our next couple of games. With that being said our guys competed, stayed together, and found ways to make enough plays down the stretch to earn the win.” 

Senior Abram Godfrey scored a game-high 23 points for Moscow (3-9). Senior Jonas Mordhorst added 14. 

Lakeland plays host to Sandpoint on Friday in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game.

KELLOGG — Junior Porter Lewis scored 23 points, senior Draeden Taylor 21 for the Wildcats, who led by three points at halftime before pulling away to beat the visiting Tigers in nonleague play at Andrews Gymnasium. 

“On the offensive side, it was a lot of trusting that process,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said of the second half. “Defensively we had some lapses in the second quarter, and they were able to get out in transition. We were able to get out and defend in the third quarter, and that helps fuel the pace we want to play with on the offensive side.” 

After Timberlake (3-5) went up 23-22, Lewis made two of his five 3-pointers late in the second quarter to put Kellogg (4-6) up 28-25 at the half. 

Ty Cheney added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Kellogg, Cayden Honnerlaw had four steals, and Taylor had six rebounds and five assists.  

“He’s always been able to score the ball,” Martin said of Taylor. “But to make that transition to a leader on the floor just shows the hard work that he’s putting in.” 

Senior Brant Rush led Timberlake with 18 points. 

We didn’t come ready to play on either side of the ball today,” Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. “Kellogg played hard and outworked us the whole game. As a coach that’s on me to have our guys better prepared and ready to compete.” 

“The Simpson kid (Max, who finished with nine points) is a load inside, so he requires a lot of attention,” Martin said of Timberlake. “And their guards are athletic. They were able to get out in transition and punish us that way.” 

Timberlake travels to St. Maries on Tuesday. 

Kellogg plays host to Orofino on Friday in Central Idaho League play.

Junior Mariana Bullington scored 11 points and junior Macy Bretveld added 10 points for Lakeland (12-2, 2-0 5A IEL), which travels to Timberlake on Tuesday.
