PREP WRESTLING: Getting healthy, plugging away ... Post Falls second, Coeur d'Alene fourth in River City Duals

POST FALLS — At this point in the season, nobody’s totally healthy. 

But both Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene are getting a lot closer. 

Senior Xander Scholes went unbeaten at 285 for the Trojans, who finished runner-up in the 29th annual River City Duals at Post Falls High on Saturday.

Scholes, along with teammates Damion Hamilton (165 pounds) and Colton Austin (157), went unbeaten for Post Falls, which lost 35-34 in the championship dual to Mead, which won the event for the first time.

“Xander hurt his knee in football and it’s been a slow process so far,” Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “He had a good weekend at The CLASH (in Wisconsin Jan. 2-3) and is getting more comfortable on the mat. It was really good to not see him think about his knee as he was competing. He’s one of our leaders and to see him step up like that, it was awesome.” 

Rocco White (113 pounds), Brock Armstrong (190) and Justus Peregrina (120) went unbeaten for Coeur d’Alene, which finished fourth. 

“We dug ourselves a hole against Post Falls, but it was good to see our guys storm back,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat, whose team went 1-2 and fell to Post Falls 45-30 in its final dual of the weekend. “I thought we wrestled tough and had a good day. We’ve just got to keep plugging away, but we showed some guts today.” 

Lake City went 1-2 in Gold Pod B to finish eighth.

Carson Leonard (120/126), Cole Cooper (150), Gage McWatters (175) and Emmit Rivadeneira (215) went unbeaten for Lakeland, which finished 3-0 in the Silver Pod A to finish ninth.

St. Maries claims 

Schmunk title

WARDEN, Wash. — St. Maries senior Beau Wentzel pinned Chance Degon of Liberty in 1:30 in the 126-pound championship match of the Jeremiah Schmunk Invitational at Warden High. 

Junior Kelby Harvey (144 pounds), senior Zach David (150), senior Amado Stewart (157), senior Aiden Yearout (165) and senior Zack Sotin (190) also won championships for St. Maries, which won the team title with 226.5 points. 

Sotin beat teammate Kristoffer Brusseau by pin in the 190-pound final. 

Rustle Brusseau (third at 215), Zayden Tobon (third at 285), Clintin Hansen (fourth at 132), Dylan Hansen (fourth at 150), Titus Sullivan (sixth at 150) and Parker Thomas (sixth at 157) also placed for St. Maries. 

Lakeside's Kager wins

at Crusader Classic

COLBERT, Wash. — Lakeside sophomore Dominic Kager pinned Newport’s Lucas Swain in 5:52 to win the 285-pound title at the Crusader Classic at Northwest Christian School. 

Senior Julian Moffitt (third at 190) and junior Eli Morris (third at 175) also placed for Lakeside, which is scheduled to compete in the Clearwater Classic at Lewiston High next Friday and Saturday.

Trojans second at 

River City Duals

POST FALLS — Vada Hutchinson (110/115 pounds), Emma Younger (125), Sophia Stewart (135) and Kahli Brown (140) went unbeaten on the tournament for the Trojans, who finished runner-up in the River City Duals at Post Falls High. 

Thunder Ridge of Idaho Falls beat Post Falls 51-30 in the Gold Bracket championship.  

Sandpoint beat Gallatin (Mont.) 54-18 in the Gold Bracket third-place match.
