POST FALLS — Celebrations for America250 are in the works in Post Falls, and the city’s historical society is looking for collaborators.
“We have some ideas, but we would like to garner help from the community in hands, donations and ideas,” Post Falls Historical Society President Catherine McClintick said.
People are invited to brainstorm ways to celebrate and preserve local and national history for Idaho residents. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. today at the Post Falls Police Department Community Center, 1717 E. Polston Ave.
Post Falls Historical Society members want to create events with a historic anchor leading up to the 250th anniversary of the United States of America on July 4.
Kim Brown, a past president of the group, said the society has always been “honoring inspired by the efforts of our ancestors,” and this occasion is another opportunity to share the unique history of Post Falls.
“This 250th celebration is a living one, connecting our oldest history," Brown said. "We have at least 100 Revolutionary War descendants, including a relative of George Washington living today in PF now and many Civil War and other war veterans and families from all conflicts living here."
A historic costume contest, a heritage food festival and living history lectures are being considered as potential events.
Brown said, above all, the America250 celebration is a way to show that Post Falls is a living, growing city.
“We hope to uplift and look forward to building on our heritage,” Brown said. “We look back for inspiration and foundation.”
The Post Falls Historical Society is working to identify pioneers on gravestones at the Evergreen Cemetery to preserve local history.
“Our country is built on the promise of our ideals, and this celebration and commemoration supports the mission to advance the ideals of the American Revolution (equality, liberty and justice) through meaningful community engagement and recognize, appreciate and commemorate Idaho's journey in America's legacy,” Brown said.
