Soap Lake Library, Creative District hold crowdsourced art show

SOAP LAKE — Artists who like to think small are invited to show their stuff at the Six by Six Community Art Show.
The show, a collaboration between the Soap Lake Creative District, will feature handmade wall art no more than six inches by six inches, submitted by local artists and displayed at the Soap Lake Public Library.
“We have a very limited space in the library, because we’ll be bringing in extra hardware to display these items,” said Branch Librarian Evynn Olson. “It’s kind of a creative challenge.”
Besides the size limitation, artwork submitted must be handmade, according to the rules posted on the library’s website. No prints or digital artwork is permitted. Because the show is open to artists and viewers of all ages, anything submitted must be family-friendly. Each artist may submit up to five pieces, although how many of those are displayed at any given time will depend on how many submissions the library receives.
“If things are bought during the art show, we will be able to circulate other art pieces that we may not have room for at first,” Olson said.
All the art will be for sale to the public for $25 per item, with the full sale price going back to the artist.
The library hadn’t yet received any submissions as of Thursday, Olson said. Art can be dropped off any time during library hours until April 18, according to the website. Sales will be held March 27 and April 18, and any art that doesn’t sell can be picked up April 21.
The show was inspired by a similar one held by Bright Place Art Gallery in Bend, Ore., Olson said.
“We wanted to bring that to Soap Lake and see what we can do for the community,” Olson said.

Valentine’s Day cards flood Brookdale Hearthstone with love
MOSES LAKE — Residents at Brookdale Hearthstone Assisted Living in Moses Lake got Valentine’s Day greetings from across the country last month. “I believe that the only states we have not received (cards from) yet are Vermont and Maine,” Lifestyle Director Imelda Broyles said Feb. 24. “We keep receiving new cards every single day. They have not stopped. My residents are in awe with every single one of the cards that we’ve been receiving.” The Hearts Across America project started as a way for children in school classrooms to exchange Valentine’s Day cards with classes in other states or even countries, but the idea has expanded to senior living facilities, according to the project’s social media.
