A runaway third quarter helped lift the Troy girls basketball team to a 49-36 win Saturday over Valley Christian at the Troy Activity Center.
It also stopped a two-game losing streak for head coach Steve Morris’ Lady Trojans as they evened their record at 3-3.
Kirsti Jellesed led Troy with 14 points while Aspen Orr had 13. Hailey Dungan and Olivia Hall each scored seven points and Mellissa Laffoon had three.
Holding a narrow, two-point lead at halftime, 18-16, Troy scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to make it 31-16.
Hall got things started for the Lady Trojans with a drive to the basket, then Jellesed hit a 3-pointer to make it 23-16. Hall’s 3 made it a double digit lead, 26-16, with 6:05 left in the third. Orr’s steal and score a minute later made it 28-16, then Jellesed hit another triple for a 31-16 lead.
Valley got the deficit down to 10 points, 33-23, but Dungan scored the last four points of the quarter to make it 37-23 entering the fourth. Dungan scored on a putback and on a layup after getting the ball and taking it three-quarters of the court.
Troy built the lead to 18 points quickly in the first 87 seconds of the fourth. Hall’s layup and Dungan’s basket in the post made it 41-23.
While Valley trimmed the lead to 10 points, 43-33, with four minutes left, the Lady Trojans put the game in the win column with a 6-0 run in the next two minutes.
Laffoon scored a layup, then Orr’s long pass to Jellesed led to a layup and Orr’s steal and score made it 49-33.
Troy returns to action Friday at Mission, then returns home Saturday to host Victor.
