COEUR d’ALENE — A man accused of threatening to kill another man with a crowbar, prompting a SWAT response to a Post Falls residence, remains in the Kootenai County jail.

Tristan C. Evans, 28, is charged with aggravated assault, a felony, as well as resisting or obstructing officers and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors. He also faces a persistent violator enhancement.

In court Monday afternoon, First District Judge Destry Randles ordered that Evans be held on $200,000 bail. He cited Evans' history of criminal convictions and the seriousness of the allegations as reasons for the high bail amount.

“I have significant concerns about your ability to conform your conduct to subsequent requirements of the court,” Randles told Evans, who appeared in court via a video feed from jail. “I also have some fairly significant concerns, given the potential penalty here, which is a life sentence, which I find would increase the risk of flight.”

In Idaho, a person convicted of a felony for the third time is considered a persistent violator. A third conviction with a persistent violator enhancement carries a minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum sentence of life.

Prosecutors said Evans was recently released from prison in Washington and was staying at a home in Post Falls on Saturday night, when the incident occurred.

Around 10:20 p.m., another occupant of the residence contacted authorities and said that, during a dispute, Evans had grabbed a crowbar and “started behaving erratically.” Evans allegedly approached another household member and threatened to kill him.

Deputies attempted to have Evans leave the residence, according to a news release published by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. When he refused, the Kootenai County Joint Agency SWAT Team responded to the residence.

“After the deployment of distraction devices, the suspect surrendered without further incident,” a news release said.

Prosecutors said Evans has three previous felony convictions out of Washington, including assault in 2014, harassment or threat to kill in 2019 and assault with a deadly weapon in 2021.
