KELLOGG — Senior Dani Henrikson had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats in an overtime win over the Miners at Andrews Gymnasium.

“Both teams came out tough tonight,” Kellogg coach Jana Nearing said. “It’s a good rivalry, and our girls who were in foul trouble were able to play smart defense and stay in the game through overtime.”

Freshman Gretah Angle scored 16 points and sophomore Peyton Storey had nine rebounds for Kellogg.

Junior Khepri Wood scored 22 points and Kylee Phillips added 16 points for Wallace.

“It was a hard-fought game by both teams,” Wallace coach Nichole Farkas said. “We struggled to get much going in the first quarter and in OT, but we played aggressive defense and I am super proud of the girls’ effort. It was a fun game and we’re continuing to get better.”

KELLOGG BOYS BASKETBALL

- 1/6

St. Maries 63 Kellogg 58

ST. MARIES — Senior JJ Yearout nearly had a triple-double, totaling 19 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals as the Lumberjacks fended off the Wildcats in Central Idaho League play.

Senior Isaiah Gustaffe added 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, along with five rebounds for St. Maries. Senior Xavier Sloper had 16 points and six boards.

“It was kind of an ugly win,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We know each other so well, you just have to go out and make plays eventually.”

Chase praised the defense of Gustaffe, with help from Yearout, on Kellogg’s Draeden Taylor, who finished with eight points.

“He had 41 in their last two games at that Lewiston tournament,” Chase said. “They did a good job making it tough on him.”

Porter Lewis led Kellogg with 17 points, and Cayden Honnerlaw added 13. Evan Vindasius made three 3-pointers and scored all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter.

“It was a really good game tonight,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “Offensively, we got stuck in the mud a little offensively. St. Maries does a good job of sending bodies to the ball and we weren’t able to find the bottom of the net. We’d get back into it and they’d make a run. In the middle of the third, we just let JJ (Yearout) get loose, and he was super effective in the second half. It was good to see our guys answer the call, but we just didn’t make enough plays to get over the hump.”

Kellogg 72 Timberlake 50

KELLOGG — Junior Porter Lewis scored 23 points, senior Draeden Taylor 21 for the Wildcats, who led by three points at halftime before pulling away to beat the visiting Tigers in nonleague play at Andrews Gymnasium.

“On the offensive side, it was a lot of trusting that process,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said of the second half. “Defensively, we had some lapses in the second quarter, and they were able to get out in transition. We were able to get out and defend in the third quarter, and that helps fuel the pace we want to play with on the offensive side.”

After Timberlake went up 23-22, Lewis made two of his five 3-pointers late in the second quarter to put Kellogg up 28-25 at the half.

Ty Cheney added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Kellogg, Cayden Honnerlaw had four steals, and Taylor had six rebounds and five assists.

“He’s always been able to score the ball,” Martin said of Taylor. “But to make that transition to a leader on the floor just shows the hard work that he’s putting in.”

Senior Brant Rush led Timberlake with 18 points.

“We didn’t come ready to play on either side of the ball today,” Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. “Kellogg played hard and outworked us the whole game. As a coach that’s on me to have our guys better prepared and ready to compete.”

“The Simpson kid (Max, who finished with nine points) is a load inside, so he requires a lot of attention,” Martin said of Timberlake. “And their guards are athletic. They were able to get out in transition and punish us that way.”
