The Columbia Falls girls basketball team came away with two key conference wins last week, dropping Ronan at home last Tuesday 63-55 and then Bigfork on the road two nights later, 53-36.
Onnikka Lawrence scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Wildkats against Bigfork and Alexa Friske had 10 points.
Against Ronan, Friske had 21 points, Lawrence and Rylee Sweeney 10 and Peyton Ross 9 to lead the Kats. The Kats led 28-17 at the break and held on for the win in the second half.
Coach Jeremy Grilley said they knew they had the athletes to put up points after a slow offense start to the season.
“The girls deserve the credit. They stayed confident in themselves,” he said. “We’re looking like a really tough team.”
While the offensive output was nice, Grilley said the emphasis is still on defense and rebounding. The girls had 12 steals against Ronan and Bigfork. Against the Valkyries they had 13 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds. Against Ronan, 26 defensive boards and 13 offensive. They also have a host of girls scoring at least a few points a game, Grilley noted.
The girls travel to Libby Thursday. They’re now 5-3 on the season.
