PREP ROUNDUP: Miller tops 1,000 career point mark as Timberlake avenges earlier loss to Lakeland

SPIRIT LAKE — In November, Timberlake High senior Malia Miller got her state title as a member of the school’s cross country team. 

On Tuesday, she achieved another milestone on the basketball court. 

Miller, who missed her sophomore season with a torn ACL, scored her 1,000th career point in the third quarter, finishing with 17 for the Tigers in a 57-51 win over district rival Lakeland at Timberlake High. 

Miller, who signed to play basketball at NAIA Southern Oregon in Ashland, Ore., in November, achieved the mark in 60 games, the second fastest in program history. Cassie Thompson, who went on to play at Portland, scored her 1,000th point in 57 games. 

Miller now has 1,007 career points.

“It’s really impressive,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, Malia’s father. “She’s missed 27 games in her high school career and to still be able to do it, I’m very happy for her.” 

Timberlake took a 52-51 lead on a 3-pointer by junior Sophie Holecek. Junior Macy Murphey, who finished with 19 points, extended the lead to 55-51 on a 3-pointer late in the fourth. 

“Lakeland just destroyed us on the boards in the first half,” said Matt Miller, whose Tigers lost 67-40 at Lakeland on Nov. 20. “We did a better job on the boards in the second half and were able to get some open looks.” 

Timberlake (7-5) travels to Bonners Ferry for the Backwoods Brawl spirit basketball game on Saturday. 

Freshman Jaeli Hoffman scored 16 points for Lakeland (12-3), which hosts Sandpoint in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game on Friday.

SANDPOINT — Junior Brookeslee Colvin scored 21 of her game-high 37 points in the second half for the Vikings in a nonleague win over the Bulldogs at Les Rogers Court. 

Colvin also had eight rebounds and six assists for Coeur d’Alene (15-2), which has won nine straight games. Sophomore Lexie Wheeler had 11 points, four rebounds and two steals for the Vikings. 

Junior Jordyn Tomco, who has verbally committed to NCAA Division II Alaska-Anchorage, had 23 points for Sandpoint (13-3), which travels to Lakeland for the Battle for the Paddle spirit basketball games on Friday. 

Coeur d’Alene travels to Moscow on Thursday.

ST. MARIES — Senior JJ Yearout had 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, and also had five assists and four rebounds as the host Lumberjacks fended off the Tigers in nonleague play. 

Junior Landon Riberich added 15 points for St. Maries (7-1). Senior Jack Barta had five points, five rebounds and four assists, and junior Jaxson Harold had seven points and eight rebounds off the bench. 

“We got rattled a few times, but ultimately, we kept our composure,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “When they cut the lead down, we executed. Early on we attacked their man-to-man press and got a couple of easy ones.” 

Senior Lake Hiaasen, stepping in for the injured Wade Van Gundy at point guard, led Timberlake (3-6) with 14 points, including a pair of 3s in the third quarter to help keep it close. Senior Brant Rush added 12 points for the Tigers. 

“That’s a real good team coach Chase has down there,” Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. “They really make you work for everything. We had a good start to the game, then hit a dry spell to end the first and it continued into second quarter. Yearout  is a special player. He can do it all. Mason Shively and Brendan Martin made him work hard for his 16 tonight.” 

“They play hard, they’re aggressive, they picked up full-court man,” Chase said of Timberlake. “They definitely dictated the tempo tonight.” 

St. Maries travels to Priest River on Thursday in Central Idaho League play. 

Timberlake returns to action Saturday at Bonners Ferry in the Backwoods Brawl spirit game.

BONNERS FERRY — In a wild one where four players combined to score more than 20 points, the host 4A Badgers got 29 points from senior Sulay Abubakari to outlast the 2A Knights in overtime. 

Junior Peyton Hinthorn added 27 points for Bonners Ferry (5-5), winners of the last two state championships. Junior Ty Schrock added 16 points for the Badgers. 

Senior Hallah Peone hit five 3-pointers and scored 26 points for Lakeside (8-1), which suffered its first loss of the season. Senior Tyson Charley added 21 points, and freshman Teagan Brown scored 16.

POST FALLS — Senior Gage Loftin (113 pounds), Brandon Felix (138), Colton Austin (165), Landon Moore (190), Zane Smith (215) and Xander Scholes (285) notched wins on Senior Night for the Trojans in a dual win over the Hawks at Post Falls High. 

“It was an awesome night to celebrate those guys that put a lot of time and energy into our program,” Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “We had nine seniors in the lineup, so it was really cool to see. The guys are wrestling really well.”
