PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Rogier, Yanik fire in triples as Clark Fork squads post wins over Mullan

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 2 hours, 2 minutes AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 15, 2026 1:00 AM

CLARK FORK — Junior Jesse Yanik scored a career-high 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting from behind the 3-point line, senior Owen Howard collected a double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds to go along with four blocks, and senior Westin Caven recorded a double-double of 19 points and 11 assists and came away with a game-high seven steals as the Wampus Cats romped to a huge non-league win over the Tigers on Tuesday night at Clark Fork High.

Howard, who had 21 of his 23 points in the first half, also had four steals, Yanik tallied four assists of his own, and freshman Kingston Hudson netted a career-high 10 points and grabbed five steals as he rose to the occasion in his first career varsity start for Clark Fork, which led 49-5 at halftime.

"A big dunk from Owen early in the first quarter set the tone," Clark Fork High head coach Stillman Berkley noted. "Jesse was able to shoot like he does all the time in practice; I expect to see a lot more of that from him... Westin dished out the ball incredibly tonight and made great decisions."

Colten Imes scored a team-high seven points for Mullan, which is now 1-3 on the season.

Senior Payton Stevens chipped in three steals while Caven pulled down five boards for Clark Fork (3-3), which will travel to face Bonners Ferry's junior varsity squad today before heading to Coeur du Christ on Friday for a non-league matchup.

CLARK FORK — Freshman Vanessa Rogier locked in for a career-high 17 points, which included three third-quarter 3-pointers, to go along with nine rebounds and a game-high nine steals, senior Priscilla Mayorga registered seven points, nine rebounds and a game-high five blocks, and the Lady Cats took down the Lady Tigers in a non-league game held Tuesday night at Clark Fork High.

Rogier also blocked three shots, Mayorga added three assists and three steals to the stat sheet, and senior Piper Scarlett buried a 3-pointer in the victory for Clark Fork, which led 19-8 at intermission.

"The girls played well tonight — our defense really carried us throughout the game," Clark Fork High head coach Chris Cavanaugh said. "I was happy that we were able to get into our plays a lot better tonight; we just had a tough time getting the ball to go into the hoop. Vanessa got on a run with a few baskets and really got after it on the offensive boards."

Kaydence Elliott had a team-high six points for Mullan, which is now 2-5 on the year.

Freshman Kiylah Anderson chipped in three points and six rebounds, sophomore Azelynn Petersen three assists and four steals, sophomore Gracie Stevens two points and three steals, and sophomore Elyssa Raynor two points and seven rebounds for Clark Fork (3-7), which will host the Kootenai Classical Academy of Post Falls today for a non-league matchup.

Coeur d'Alene 67, Sandpoint 58

SANDPOINT — Junior Jordyn Tomco drained three 3-pointers en route to a team-high 23 points and two steals, junior Brecken Mire found nylon from beyond the arc twice on her way to a total of 14 points and a team-high three assists, and the Lady Bulldogs played the Lady Vikings closely, but were ultimately defeated in a 6A/5A Inland Empire League showdown held Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.

Junior Livia Driggs recorded 14 points of her own, including a 3-pointer, and senior Jasmin Laing added five points and two steals to the stat sheet for Sandpoint, which trailed 35-27 at halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs cut the lead to 40-35 with under three minutes to go in the third quarter after a Mire drove the lane for a layup. In the fourth, Laing and Driggs fought through contact underneath and converted to keep it at a 55-46 Lady Vikings advantage, Tomco then found Laing wide open down low to keep it at a 58-49 margin, and later, Driggs completed a 3-point play and splashed a mid-range floater to pull Sandpoint back within six points, 60-54, before Coeur d'Alene pulled away.

Sandpoint High head coach Madi Schoening said she was proud of her team's effort, but turnovers, finishing layups and missed free throws were the difference maker.

"We knew that it was going to be a big battle, and for us to make it the game that it was, I was proud of the girls," coach Schoening said. "We've been struggling to score the last couple of games, and it just goes to show that we've been working hard on our offense this week and were able to convert... the girls were able to come into a timeout, go to the drawing board, and produce offensively."

Junior Brookeslee Colvin, who has 25-plus Division I offers, had a game-high 37 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Coeur d'Alene, which is now 15-2 on the year and is currently riding an 8-game winning streak.

"Game-prepping for Brokeslee Colvin is not an easy thing to do — we knew she was going to get her points," coach Schoening noted. "She's a really talented player who's hard to play, but fun to watch. Proud of the way Brecken defended her."

Sophomore Willow Betz contributed two points and three rebounds, senior Mia Driggs four rebounds, and Livia Driggs and Tomco both had two assists for Sandpoint (13-3), which will prepare for a 5A Inland Empire League game at Lakeland on Friday as part of the Battle for the Paddle spirit competition.
