COEUR d’ALENE — Now 19 games into the season, the construction still hasn’t stopped for the Post Falls girls.
A few pieces back, allowing the team to try some different things.
Not quite a finished product, but closer.
Sophomore Jaya Felix scored a game-high 20 points for the Trojans, who beat the Lake City Timberwolves 51-38 in a 6A Inland Empire League game on Wednesday at Lake City High.
Senior Olivia Hollenbeck scored 11 points for Post Falls (6-13, 1-1 6A IEL), which had senior guard Kailey Walton back for the first time since Dec. 19 after she suffered a hamstring injury against Mt. Spokane.
“Jaya Felix came to play tonight and she was unbelievable,” Post Falls coach Brian Carlson said. “She played great inside, and that’s how she played earlier in the season, and then had a lull, but was great tonight. Olivia Hollenbeck was awesome. Defensively, she’s always been our meter a little with Kailey out and a senior leader. It was super nice to Kailey back, but the big thing was she helped us get in our offense and into our stuff.”
Post Falls led 12-3 after the first quarter. Lake City used an 11-4 run at the end of the half to cut the deficit to 22-18 at halftime.
“Sometimes, when you have festivities before the game, it gets your focus off,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “I think we needed to come out a little stronger, but Post Falls came out tough. They played hard and chased us around. It was difficult to get set and comfortable.”
Hollenbeck hit a 3-pointer midway through the third quarter to extend the lead to 29-19 for the Trojans, who held the Timberwolves to four points in the fourth quarter.
“The big difference for us was on the defensive end,” Post Falls coach Brian Carlson said. “Our pressure really gave them a lot of issues. It was kind of like us honestly, and we struggle against pressure sometimes. We were able to press them and get some shots.”
Post Falls concludes the regular season at home against Coeur d’Alene on Jan. 24, then hosts Lake City in the regular season finale on Jan. 30.
“We had a really good week of practice and the kids have really worked on their defense,” Carlson said. “Our defense is what led to our offense tonight and we were able to speed them up. Our kids are working hard in practice and hopefully we can continue to build on that.”
Juniors Maggie Hiltenbrand and Ella Pearson scored 11 points each for Lake City (6-9, 0-2), which travels to Moscow on Saturday.
“We made some runs, but just not enough,” Pratt said. “We got some good looks, but the ball just wasn’t going in. We might have been too tight, and the coach was getting on them and that kind of thing. But Post Falls played hard. Credit to them.”
Lake City lost senior Abby Smith for the season with a torn right ACL, limiting the varsity roster to seven players.
“These kids are resilient and a great group of kids,” Pratt said. “And I love them. Today, I think Post Falls made us run around a lot and we didn’t capitalize and missed a lot of free throws. We just couldn’t get comfortable.”
