The South Boundary Fire Protection District held its annual awards banquet Jan. 10 at the district’s fire hall, honoring volunteers for their service and dedication.

“It’s for our volunteers and their families,” South Boundary volunteer Cori Vandecoevering said. “It’s an appreciation for everybody — all the time that they spend here and their dedication.”

“It was a night filled with gratitude, pride and well-earned recognition,” the department wrote on Facebook.

For the first time, the district awarded service pins recognizing five years of service. Nine members received pins this year, with an additional pin awarded for each subsequent five-year milestone.

Captain Roy Holzhauser was recognized for 20 years of service and leadership with multiple service pins and a plaque.

“Roy was awarded service pins for each five-year milestone and presented with a plaque in appreciation of two decades of steady leadership, mentorship and commitment to this department and community,” the department stated.

Engineer Steve Bortz was honored for 30 years as a volunteer firefighter.

“Steve’s commitment, experience and influence have helped shape South Boundary across generations,” the department said. “He was awarded service pins and a plaque in recognition of a legacy built on service, knowledge and dedication spanning three decades.”

Vandecoevering said the department wanted to give additional recognition to both longtime volunteers.

“I just thought it would be nice to recognize the two of them. It’s huge to have somebody volunteer for that many years,” she said. “A lot of people’s careers don’t even last that long. To give that kind of time and dedication, I thought they should have a little bit of extra recognition. They’re both pretty amazing.”

The Firefighter of the Year award was presented to Kris Lummus for his “leadership, dedication and selfless service.”

“Kris gives countless hours to this department, spends his time teaching and mentoring others and consistently leads by example,” the department said.

In 2025, the department responded to 189 calls for service. Alexis Vandecoevering responded to the most calls, answering 79.
