Sentinel basketball sweeps Wolfpack

The Glacier girls came out swinging led by Karley Allen, while the boys stayed tasked with a hot-shooting night from Sentinel’s Lincoln Rodgers and Beau O’Reilly leading to a Spartans sweep of the Wolfpack in a hard-fought Western AA boys and girls basketball doubleheader.


Allen scored 30 points and made five 3-pointers for the Wolfpack, Glacier exchanged lead changes for three quarters, but the Spartans pulled away late for a 54-43 victory. 


“I thought we played incredibly hard,” Glacier girls coach Amanda Cram said. “Karley was a dog tonight, she led, she defended, and she put us on her back.” 


The boys' game saw Sentinel jump out to an early 32-9 lead and never let Glacier recover in a 63-36 win. Rogers caught fire from deep, making four 3-pointers and throwing down a pair of dunks. 


“Sentinel plays really good defense. They’re very long,” Glacier boys coach Evan Epperly said. “If you’re not knocking down threes against them, it’s going to be a tough night.”

Lucy Pfhaler scored a team-high 24 points for the Spartans (5-3 overall, 2-1 in Western AA games) and Avery Ogren had 11 points. 


The Spartans set the tone early with a 13-7 lead after the first quarter, using its length to disrupt Glacier’s (1-8, 0-4) offense.  


It didn’t stop Allen though, as she took over in the second quarter for Glacier, making three 3-pointers, totaling 17 points at halftime with a 23-20 lead. 


“One of Karley’s goals this week was to be a great leader, and good leadership turns into success on the basketball court. She just shined tonight,” said Cram. 


The third quarter saw a high-spirited Wolfpack team with energy and effort on the defensive end. Allen continued to lead by example by scoring through contact and making plays on both ends.  


Glacier led 37-35 going into the final period. The Spartans opened with two quick layups to erase the deficit and outscored the Wolfpack 20-6 to close the game. 


“Defense is where we know we have to start. We’ve been coaching them to be aggressive on the ball, defend the post, and trust their teammates,” said Cram on adjustments moving forward.

Sentinel (8-1, 4-0 in Western AA games) led 17-4 after one period. The Spartans made 10 three-pointers, with seven of them coming in the first half. 


Tate Kahler led Glacier (3-6, 0-4) in scoring with 14 points on six field goals. 


After trailing 34-13 at the break, Glacier was only outscored 29-23 for the remaining time.  


Carter Knopik scored seven of his 10 points in the third quarter to cut into the Spartans lead. Carter’s older brother Asher added 8 points on four shots. 


In the final frame, Kahler scored six points for the Wolfpack and Glacier outscored Sentinel 15-13 to end the game. 


“You’ve got to handle wins the right way, and you have to handle losses the right way, that’s basketball,” said Epperly.
