PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lakeland believes, beats Sandpoint

RATHDRUM — A strong start and a strong finish lifted the Lakeland Hawks to a 48-45 victory over the Sandpoint Bulldogs on Friday at Hawk Court in 5A Inland Empire League play in the boys Battle for the Paddle spirit basketball game. 

Senior Jaron Yager had 12 points and eight rebounds for Lakeland (7-4, 2-0 5A IEL), which jumped out to a 14-1 lead in the first quarter. 

Sandpoint (7-5, 0-1) trailed by 14 points in the third quarter, but tied it at 38 with just over 3 minutes left. 

Yager then drove the lane and dished to a cutting Wyatt Fuhriman for a layup — the junior’s only basket of the game — as the Hawks scored five straight points and kept the lead the rest of the way. 

Sandpoint pulled within one point twice, but missed a free throw with 9 seconds left that would have tied it. 

Lakeland senior Peyton Hillman, who finished with 12 points, sank two free throws with 4.5 seconds for a three-point lead, and Sandpoint missed a half-court heave at the buzzer. 

“I was really proud of our start — I thought our guys came out with great energy and focus,” second-year Lakeland coach Caleb De Fabiis said. “Our attention to detail on the scout was great to see. No one outside our locker room had us winning this game, and I was proud of the way our guys believed in each other and found a way to finish, even when Sandpoint made its run.”

Senior Brayden Carrel added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Lakeland, which travels to defending 5A District 1 champion Lewiston on Tuesday for another 5A IEL game. Carrel scored three straight baskets in the Hawks’ first-quarter run. 

Senior Logan Roos led Sandpoint with 12 points. 

Lakeland and Sandpoint meet again Feb. 13 in Sandpoint. 

“They have a lot of talent over there, and I have a ton of respect for what they do," De Fabiis said of Sandpoint. “We had four really good days of practice leading into this one, and our guys wanted it badly after letting this game get away last year.”

KIRKLAND, Wash. — The visiting Vikings trailed by just two points at halftime before falling to the Kangaroos. 

Caden Symons, playing through illness, scored 20 points for Coeur d’Alene (5-8), which trimmed an 11-point lead to four before two big turnovers slowed the comeback. 

Junior Tannar Stern added 11 points for the Vikings. 

“Our biggest issue is committing too many turnovers,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kent Leiss said. “We don’t give ourselves a chance when we turn it over too much.” 

Senior Mateo Cummings hit six 3-pointers and scored 27 points for Lake Washington (13-1).  

“Lake Washington is good,” Leiss said. “We still have a lot of work to do.” 

Coeur d’Alene plays at Bothell (Wash.) today at 3.

POST FALLS — Freshman Matthew Green hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points as the host Jaguars won for the first time this season, beating the Warriors in nonleague play at The Courts at Real Life. 

Sophomore Jacob Harris added nine points for Genesis Prep (1-8), which trailed 21-17 at halftime before outscoring Kootenai 15-3 in the third quarter. 

"This team has continued to get better every game and it's nice to see their hard work and hustle help us pick up our first win tonight," first-year Genesis Prep coach Arty Warren said. "We had seven different guys score and they played so unselfishly; it was a real team effort."

Sophomore Dylan Gentry scored a game-high 21 points and also had 11 rebounds and six blocked shots for Kootenai, which returns to action Thursday at Mullan in North Star League play. 

Genesis Prep visits Clark Fork on Tuesday in Scenic Idaho Conference play.
