PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: St. Maries speeds past Grangeville for ninth straight win

ST. MARIES — Senior JJ Yearout had 28 points, 16 rebounds and five assists and the St. Maries Lumberjacks started fast en route to a 71-44 victory over the Grangeville Bulldogs in Central Idaho League play on Saturday. 

Yearout scored 10 of his points in the first half, as St. Maries (9-1, 3-0 CIL) raced to a 25-12 lead after the first quarter. 

“We started a little faster lineup tonight,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We definitely wanted to try to wear them down, get them into their bench early.” 

Senior Isaiah Gustaffe added 17 points and seven rebounds for the Lumberjacks. Senior Xavier Sloper had 14 points and five assists, and Jack Barta had five assists. 

St. Maries had 15 assists to just seven turnovers, and outrebounded the bigger Bulldogs 40-25. 

“It’s nice when your leading scorers are distributing the ball too,” Chase said. “Our persistence was good; we never played great, but never got away from what we were trying to do.” 

Bear Wilcoxon led Grangeville (1-10, 1-3) with 10 points. 

St. Maries plays host to Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

BOTHELL, Wash. — The visiting Vikings trailed by six points with 4 minutes left before junior Jaylen McLaughlin, who has an offer from the University of Washington, hit five 3-pointers in the next 90 seconds and the Cougars pulled away. 

Caden Symons, the Evansville commit, made six 3s and led all scorers with 36 points for Coeur d’Alene (5-9). He also had eight rebounds.  

Junior Davis Whittaker added 16 points for the Vikings, and junior Tannar Stern had 10 points and six rebounds. 

“Super proud of the Vikings’ effort,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kent Leiss said. “28 minutes was pretty good.” 

The 6-foot-4 McLaughlin finished with seven 3s and 33 points for Bothell (11-6). Raider Finau, a 6-9 junior, had 35 points and 13 rebounds. He hit 4 3s. 

“We could not guard (him),” Leiss said. “He hit 3s and drove us to the rim all night.” 

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lake City on Thursday.

POST FALLS — The host Trojans yielded a season high in points in the nonleague loss to the Wolfpack of Spokane at The Arena. 

“Lack of defense on our part,” Post Falls coach Jayson Ulrich said. “We can score points; I’ve never worried about us scoring points. But we can’t give up 13 3s and 81 points.” 

"They’re good, and they score at a high volume,” Ulrich said of North Central. 

Juniors Isaac Williams and Tyson Vogrig scored 18 points each for North Central (9-5), coached by former Zag Rob Sacre. 

Cashton Bodman scored 26 points, Jaxon Lysne 24 for Post Falls (10-5), which returns to action next Saturday at Coeur d’Alene in 6A Inland Empire League play.

BONNERS FERRY — Senior Sulay Abubakari scored 19 points as the host Badgers beat the Tigers in the Intermountain League opener for both schools, which was also part of the Backwoods Brawl spirit competition. 

Juniors Ty Schrock and Peyton Hinthorn added 18 points apiece for Bonners Ferry (6-5).  

Senior Brant Rush scored 18 points for Timberlake (3-7). Junior Mason Shively added 11 points and six rebounds, five of those offensive. 

“Bonners Ferry has a big physical team that plays solid on both sides of the ball,” Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. “We learned a lot of where we need to be to compete with them.”  

Timberlake closed to within 13 in the second half, then gave up an offensive rebound which led to a 3-pointer, and the Tigers followed with a turnover. 

“We need to slow down on our mental mistakes and get more consistent with our play to win games like this,” Henry said. 

Timberlake High won the spirit competition.

Timberlake plays host to North Central on Tuesday.
