Troy Trojans senior Emerson Downey had an outstanding game shooting the basketball Saturday against Victor while setting a new school record.
Downey hit 10 3-pointers to break the old school mark of eight against the Pirates. He finished the game with 41 points as the Trojans won, 88-35.
Downey’s big night helped the Trojans (6-2) rebound from an overtime loss Friday at Mission, 73-69.
It was evident that Downey was dialed in from long distance after he hit four triples in an 18-point first half. He didn’t play a lot of minutes in the third quarter, but the 3s kept coming as Downey hit six in the second half. When it became evident he had a chance at a new Trojans mark, his teammates did their best to get him shots behind the arc.
Downey’s big night also put him on an exclusive list in Montana history. He became the 16th boys basketball player to hit 10 3-pointers since Montana adopted the shot for the 1987-88 season. He joined seven other players to hit 10 3s in a game.
West Yellowstone’s Sam Leep holds the state record after hitting 14 triples in the 2019-20 season. Ronan’s Matt Luedtke is second with 13 3s in a game in 2000.
Downey’s performance gives Lincoln County schools two in the top 5. Libby’s Ryggs Johnston hit 11 3-pointers against ???? in the 2016-17 season. Incidentally, Johnston still is the state record holder for 3s in a career with 304.
In Saturday’s game, the Trojans were never challenged, taking an 11-0 lead 2 1/2 minutes after the opening tip. They led 25-0 before Victor scored its first basket with 1:39 left in the first quarter. Troy led 30-6 after the first.
The lead was 31 points at halftime, 45-14, and 65-31 after three quarters.
Four other Trojans joined Downey in double figures. Carson Orr had 15 points, Dmitrii Wallenter had 11, Nolan Morris and Maddux Stow each scored 10. Wallenter also had two 3-pointers.
The Trojans are back in action Thursday, hosting Thompson Falls.
